Criminal Justice Reform
Protecting our Environment
Transparency in Government
An issue that I am most passionate about is criminal justice reform. Allegheny County is currently spending almost $100 million per year to maintain a county jail housing an overwhelming majority of non-violent offenders, probation violators, and people unable to pay a minor cash bail. Within the walls of this jail, transgender women are being housed with men and are being physically and sexually assaulted at an alarming rate. People of color are being incarcerated at a rate completely disproportionate to the demographics of the county. Little to no treatment is being offered to incarcerated people suffering from addiction or any other mental health diagnosis. There are over 100 separate police forces within Allegheny County that do not communicate with one another. The people of Allegheny County do not have any more time to wait around for their current elected officials to stand up and speak out - if they will not give a voice to communities whose voices have been silenced, then it is time for new leadership. I am advocating for a county-wide civilian police review board, because no one has the right to be patrolling our streets with a gun and a badge without proper oversight. It is time for a public database of police violations and firings for departments across the entire county. I am fighting for Allegheny County Council to divert the enormous amount of funds that is being wasted on our county jail to treatment and education programs to prevent people from entering our criminal justice system in the first place.
Allegheny County Council is responsible for determining the budget of the entire county, providing oversight to our county jail, ensuring that the Port Authority is providing adequate and equitable access to the 1.1 million residents of Allegheny County, and holding the Allegheny County Health Department accountable for keeping our air and water safe and pollutant free.
Allegheny County Council is the legislative branch of Allegheny County government. It is designed to be the necessary checks and balances on our County Executive.
