Leos is from Albuquerque, N.M. and attended Moriarty High School. She received a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colo., and earned her J.D. in Chicago. Her professional experience includes working in private practice, as a Children's Court attorney for Child Protective Services, and in a New Mexico public defender.[1]

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[4]

The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[4]

Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[4]

  • be the minimum age of 35;
  • have at least six years legal practice;
  • be a state resident for at least three years; and
  • be a district resident.
