Nonprofit regulation

While the Internal Revenue Service designates eligible nonprofit charitable organizations with a federal tax exempt status, individual states require their own levels of regulation and reporting, particularly when organizations attempt to solicit fundraising contributions. The extent of regulation differs by state, as does the degree to which state regulations require organizations to disclose information about their donors. We are examining the role that state laws play in regulation of nonprofit and highlighting the differences between states in our Nonprofit Regulation Project.[1]
