David L. Bunning is an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky. He joined the Court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush.
Early life and education
Born in Fort Thomas, Ky., Bunning graduated from the University of Kentucky with his bachelor's degree in 1988 and his J.D. in 1991.[1]

Judicial career
Eastern District of Kentucky
On the recommendation of Senators Jim Bunning and Mitch McConnell, Bunning was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky by President George W. Bush on September 4, 2001, to a seat vacated by William Bertelsman. Bertelsman went on senior status at that time. Bunning was confirmed by the United States Senate in a vote on February 14, 2002, and received commission on February 19, 2002.[2]
Noteworthy cases
Death row inmate will not receive new trial (2014)
Mitchell Willoughby sought to have his conviction overturned and have a new trial. He was convicted of the murders of three people in the early 1980s. Willoughby was convicted in 1983 of murdering Jacqueline Greene, Joe Norman and Joey Durham. He challenged his conviction on the basis of trial errors. Judge David Bunning, however, reviewed Willoughby’s case and found no errors occurred that would be sufficient to require a new trial. He issued his ruling on September 3, 2014.
