David Roth
David Roth (Democratic Party) is running for election to the U.S. House to represent Idaho's 2nd Congressional District. He is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024. He advanced from the Democratic primary on May 21, 2024.
Biography
David Roth grew up in Idaho Falls, Idaho. His career experience includes working as the executive director of the Bonneville Youth Development Council. Roth has served on the boards of the Habitat for Humanity of the Idaho Falls Area and the Idaho Falls Soup Kitchen and has served as the treasurer of the Community Coalitions of Idaho.[1][2]

I am a father of 2 young sons living in Idaho Falls. I am currently the Executive Director of a small non-profit focused on drug and alcohol prevention among youth. In addition to my day job I serve on several non-profit boards related to housing, food insecurity, as well as a statewide organization focused on substance use prevention.
- I believe Americans face real problems everyday which require real solutions.
- We need to focus on the needs of everyday Idahoans.
- Leaders should look for solutions not votes.
I am particularly interested in education, healthcare, the opioid crisis, immigration and agriculture.

I believe that one of the critical pieces of our representative democracy is that we depend on elected leaders to listen to our concerns and then act to solve those problems. So many of the current political struggles seem to revolve around issues that have very little to do with what is happening in our every day lives. As your Senator I want to rebuild that connection between the people in our communities and our government representatives. That being said, I do think it important to share where I stand on a few issues facing our nation. I hope you will check back often as I plan to add more detail as the campaign progresses.
Addressing Substance Use in the United States The number of drug-related deaths in the United States is growing every year. Here in Idaho, we have seen the number of overdose deaths double in the last year, resulting in such tragic costs to our state. While the opposition is quick to point to excuses, what they fail to do is acknowledge the root causes of addiction in our country or offer any real solutions to this very real problem. I support directing more federal resources that are dedicated to evidenced-based programs proven to reduce substance use. These programs have been successfully implemented in communities across our country, including several right here in Idaho. These programs are addressing the root causes of addiction and are proven to be successful. The federal government should work in partnership with our communities to solve these problems. Idaho is strong – our communities are resilient. Our federal government needs to work hand-in-hand with our local community leaders - doctors and other healthcare providers, parents, schools, faith-based communities and nonprofits that are on the front lines every day and that know the people, understand the problem, and have the solution.
Our country is continuing to fall behind our allies when it comes to the basic education of our children. Idaho continues to rank among the lowest in the nation as far as per-pupil spending. And though K-12 education is often managed at the state level, the federal government has an important support role to play. As your Senator, I will fight for more coordinated efforts to bring critical resources to our schools and communities. I would like to see more incentives that encourage states to increase their own investments in education, especially early childhood programs. When Idaho invests in our kids, the federal government should be there to strengthen that investment with more dollars, more tools and more resources for our classroom teachers. In addition, I believe that programs such as the 21st Century Learning program which have been responsible for opening new afterschool programs in our state offer value and should be expanded. I believe that the best investment that we can make in the future of our country is to invest in education.
Healthcare The Affordable Care Act did much to expand access to critical healthcare. However, there are still some shortfalls. Of particular concern are the high cost of prescription drugs and the poor coverage of and access to mental health services, especially in rural areas. I support measures which will reduce the costs of life-saving medications such as insulin. I would like to see increased investments in telehealth infrastructure to bring critical services to underserved areas. I believe that we need to work to fix the gaps in the ACA to make sure that the program can serve even greater numbers of Americans – especially the far too often left behind citizens of our rural farming communities.
Immigration For years our country has avoided much needed reform in our immigration system. Since we have not been able to come to meaningful agreement, our current system is cobbled together using inefficient, outdated policies that fail to take into consideration the realities of today’s world. We have millions in our country who have lived for years in limbo constantly fearing a change in their status. Our farmers and ranchers face severe labor shortages as guest workers meet so many obstacles trying to enter the country legally for seasonal work. In short, our immigration program does not work for immigrants and it certainly is not meeting the needs of the United States and our agricultural and business communities. I support a pathway to citizenship for the Dreamers - recognizing their contributions to the communities in which they have lived nearly their entire lives. I support immigration policies which will create an efficient, safe, and legal means of immigration into this country allowing immigrants to become incorporated into our larger society and encourages their contribution to the growth and productivity of our communities.[3] |
