Edgardo Ramos is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 2011 after a nomination from Barack Obama. At the time of nomination, Ramos was a private practice attorney in New York.[1]

Education

Ramos received a bachelor's from Yale College in 1982 and a J.D. from the Harvard Law in 1987.[2]

On May 4, 2011, President Obama nominated Edgardo Ramos to the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York to a seat vacated by Stephen Robinson (New York).[3] Obama told the press:

These individuals have demonstrated the talent, expertise, and fair-mindedness Americans expect and deserve from their judicial system. I am grateful for their willingness to serve and confident that they will apply the law with the utmost impartiality and integrity.[2][4]

Ramos was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on July 28, 2011, and you can find his Committee Questionnaire available here and his Questions for the Record available here.[5]

He was reported by the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 15, 2011, and was confirmed with a Senate vote of 89-0 on December 5, 2011.[6]

Noteworthy case

Judge declines to block House subpoenas

On May 22, 2019, Judge Edgardo Ramos declined to block subpoenas from the U.S. House seeking financial records from President Trump. He ruled that Deutsche Bank and Capital One could turn over financial information regarding Trump and his businesses. Ramos also said he disagreed with arguments from Trump's lawyers that requests for documents from House Financial Services and Intelligence committees did not have a legislative purpose.[7][8]
