Gladys Kessler was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. She joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by President Bill Clinton (D). Kessler assumed senior status on January 22, 2007. Her service ended on March 16, 2023, upon her death.[1]

Early life and education

A native of New York, New York, Kessler graduated from Cornell University with her bachelor's degree in 1959 and from Harvard Law School with her LL.B. in 1962.[1]

Kessler was nominated to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia by President Bill Clinton on March 22, 1994, to a seat vacated by Michael Boudin. The American Bar Association rated Kessler Unanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Kessler's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on May 12, 1994, and her nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden on June 14, 1994. Kessler was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on June 15, 1994, and she received her commission the next day. Kessler elected to take senior status on the court beginning on January 22, 2007. She was succeeded in this position by Judge Amy B. Jackson.[1][2][3]
