Henry Lee Adams, Jr. is a judge on senior status for the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. He assumed senior status on April 8, 2010.
Early life and education
Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Adams graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University with his bachelor's degree in 1966 and received a Juris Doctor degree from Howard University School of Law in 1969.[1]
Professional career
Adams began his legal career as a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyers Fellow for the Duval County, Florida Legal Aid Association from 1969 to 1970. Adams was the Assistant Public Defender for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Duval County, Florida from 1970 to 1972. Adams was a private practice attorney in Florida from 1972 to 1979 before being appointed to serve as a circuit judge for the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida until 1993.[1]
Judicial career
Middle District of Florida
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Bob Graham, Adams was nominated to the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida by President Bill Clinton on October 29, 1993, to a seat vacated by Susan Black as Black was appointed to serve on the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] Adams was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 20, 1993 on a Senate vote and received commission on November 24, 1993. Judge Adams assumed senior status on April 8, 2010. He was succeeded by Roy Bale Dalton, Jr..[1]
Noteworthy cases
Gay-Straight alliance wins over school board (2009)
On August 10, 2009, Judge Adams ruled that a gay-straight alliance organization at a Florida high school can meet on school grounds and be given the same privileges as other student organizations. Hannah Page and Jacob Brock of Yulee High School sued the school board in February of 2008 after administrators told the students that they could not meet at school unless they changed the name of the group. The judge said in his ruling that a school district cannot retaliate against students because of sexual orientation, a protected class under federal laws.[2]
