Interview with Springfield Daily Citizen

Laster highlighted the following themes in an interview with Springfield Daily Citizen published on July 15, 2024 and updated on July 18, 2024. [3]

Hollis L. Laster, a retired MetroBus driver from St. Louis, decided to enter the race to “open some eyes” to the number of homicides that took place in St. Louis and Kansas City in 2023. St. Louis reported the fewest homicides in a decade with 158, while Kansas City experienced its deadliest year ever recorded with 184.

Laster promoted the creation of a new type of law enforcement officer, “half social worker, half policeman,” to reduce youth gun violence and provide troubled teenagers “alternative options,” and commended apprenticeship opportunities developed under Parson’s governorship.

Laster is staunchly opposed to any changes to the initiative petition process and is in favor of the likely ballot measure that would restore abortion access in Missouri. If abortion remains restricted, Laster would like to state to be “more responsible” for the needs of children though the first 18 years of their life.

“They’re making a father’s decision, and then walking away,” Laster said of the state government. “I think they should pay something similar to child support.”

Though he didn’t speak directly to the recent expansion of MOScholars, Laster doesn’t distinguish between public and private schools, preferring funding be allocated based on enrollment.

As governor, Laster said he would push for continued increases to teacher pay, child care subsidies and investments in the semiconductor industry and mining critical minerals. [4]
