James Dale Todd is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Todd served as the chief judge of the district court from 2001 to 2007.

Early life and education

A native of Scotts Hill, Tennessee, Todd graduated from Lambuth College with his undergraduate degree in 1965, from the University of Mississippi with his master's degree in 1968, and from Memphis State University's Cecil Humphreys School of Law with his J.D. in 1972.[1]

Todd was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on June 5, 1985, to a new judgeship created by 98 Stat. 333. Hearings on Todd's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 19, 1985, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) the next day. Todd was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on July 10, 1985, and he received his commission on July 11, 1985. Todd served as the chief judge of the district court from 2001 to 2007. He elected to take senior status beginning on May 20, 2008.[1][2] Todd was succeeded in this position by Judge Stanley Anderson.
