James Hill (Eleventh Circuit)
James Clinkscales Hill was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit. He was reassigned to a new seat on the Eleventh Circuit on October 1, 1981, which was created by statute reorganizing the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. Prior to his reassignment to the Eleventh Circuit, Judge Hill served on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit from 1976 to 1981.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Darlington, South Carolina, Hill earned his B.Sc. from the University of South Carolina in 1948 and his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 1948.[1]
Military career
Hill served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
11th Circuit Court of Appeals
Hill was reassigned to a new seat on the United States Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit on October 1, 1981, which was created by statute reorganizing the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. He elected to take senior status on October 15, 1989, and served as a senior federal judge until his death on March 31, 2017. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Stanley Birch.[1]
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals
Hill was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President Gerald Ford on May 4, 1976, to a seat vacated by Griffin Bell. Hill was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 19, 1976, and he received his commission on May 21, 1976. Hill's service on the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit terminated on October 1, 1981, due to his reassignment to the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.[1]
Northern District of Georgia
Hill was nominated to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia by President Richard Nixon on July 9, 1974, to a seat vacated by Sidney Smith. Hill was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 8, 1974, and he received his commission the next day. Hill resigned from the district court on May 26, 1976, upon his elevation to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] Hill was succeeded in this position by Judge Harold Murphy.[1]
