James Leo Ryan is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. He joined the court in 1985 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ryan earned his LL.B. from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1956. He later earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Detroit in 1992.[1]

Military service

Ryan was a captain in the United States Navy Reserve, first serving as a reservist on active duty as a lieutenant and law specialist from 1957 to 1960. Ryan served as a reservist from 1957 to 1992.[1]

Ryan was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit by President Ronald Reagan on September 9, 1985, to a seat vacated by Judge George Edwards, Jr.. Hearings on Ryan's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on September 25, 1985, and his nomination was reported the next day. Ryan was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on October 16, 1985, and he received his commission the next day. Ryan assumed senior status on January 1, 2000.[1][2] He was succeeded in this position by Judge Raymond Kethledge.
