Pretto's career endeavors include working as a substitute teacher in the Mehlville School District, spending 27 years in the automobile industry, and teaching music. Pretto received her bachelor's degree from Webster University and her master's degree from the University of Phoenix. She and her husband, Joe, have two daughters.[1]

Three seats on the Mehlville School District school board were up for at-large general election on April 4, 2017. Board incumbents Jean Pretto and Samantha Stormer faced challengers Peggy Hassler and Michelle Pommer. Pretto, Stormer, and Hassler won the election.[2][3]
