James "Jim" Talent is a former U.S. senator from Missouri. He works as a senior fellow and director of the National Security 2020 project at the American Enterprise Institute. During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Talent was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration.[1]
Career
Talent earned a B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis in 1978 and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1981. From 1982 to 1983, Talent clerked for Judge Richard Posner of the United States Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit. He later worked as an adjunct professor at Washington University School of Law from 1984 to 1986.[1][2]
Government service
Talent served as a Republican in the Missouri House of Representatives from 1985 to 1993. He won election to Missouri's 2nd Congressional District in 1993 and served through 2000. During his first year in the U.S. House of Representatives, Talent organized a congressional panel aimed at addressing the "decline in military readiness." He campaigned for governor of Missouri in 2000, but lost the election to Bob Holden.[1][2]
Talent won election to the U.S. Senate from Missouri in 2002 and served through 2006. During his time in the U.S. Senate, Talent served on the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services and as chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower.[1][2][3]
Talent has also served as an appointed member of the bipartisan U.S.-China Commission as well as the Quadrennial Defense Review Independent Panel.[4][5]

As of November 2016, Talent was a partner with Banner Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., as well as a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he served as the director of the organization's National Security 2020 Project. Talent previously served as a distinguished fellow at the Heritage Foundation.[1][6][7]
Donald Trump presidential election, 2016
Talent supported the candidacies of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker (R) and U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) during the 2016 presidential election. Talent neither supported nor opposed President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.[4][8]
