John Bailey Jones was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. He joined the court in 1981 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R). Jones assumed senior status on January 1, 1995. His service ended on January 30, 2023, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Mitchell, South Dakota, Jones graduated from the University of South Dakota with his bachelor's and J.D. in 1951 and 1953 respectively.[1]

Military service

Jones served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1947.[1]

Jones was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on October 20, 1981, to a seat vacated by Fred Nichol. Jones was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on November 18, 1981, and he received his commission the same day. Jones served as the chief judge of the district court from 1991 to 1994. He elected to take senior status beginning on January 1, 1995.[1][2] Jones was succeeded in this position by Judge Charles Kornmann.
