John Decker Butzner, Jr. (1917-2006) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Fourth Circuit

Bryan was nominated to the Fourth Circuit by President Lyndon Johnson on June 27, 1967, to a seat vacated by J. Spencer Bell; he was confirmed by the Senate on July 31, 1967, and received commission that same day. He assumed senior status on November 1, 1982, and served in that capacity until his death on January 20, 2006.[1]

Eastern District of Virginia

Bryan was nominated to the Eastern District of Virginia by President John F. Kennedy on May 15, 1962, to a seat vacated by Albert Bryan Sr.; he was confirmed by the Senate on June 15, 1962, and received commission on June 20. He served until his August 1, 1967 advancement to the Fourth Circuit.[1] Butzner was succeeded in this position by Robert Merhige.
