John Thomas Curtin was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Western District of New York. He joined the court in 1967 after being nominated by President Lyndon Johnson and served as the court's chief judge between 1974 and 1989. He entered senior status on July 1, 1989, and served as a senior federal judge until his death on April 14, 2017. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he was the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York.[1]

Education

Curtin graduated from Canisius University with his bachelor's degree in 1946 and from the University of Buffalo Law School with his Bachelor of Laws in 1949.[1]

Military service

Curtin was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps. He served in active duty from 1942 to 1945 and as a reservist from 1952 to 1954.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Western District of New York

Curtin was nominated by President Lyndon B. Johnson on November 28, 1967, to a new seat created by 80 Stat. 75. Curtin was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 14, 1967, and he received his commission the same day. Curtin served as the chief judge of the Western District of New York from 1974 to 1989 before electing to take senior status on July 1, 1989. Curtin served as a senior judge until his death on April 14, 2017.[1]
