John Patrick Hartigan (1887-1968) was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit and the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He joined the First Circuit in 1951 after an appointment by Harry Truman. He joined the District of Rhode Island in 1940 after an appointment from Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At the time of appointment he was the Rhode Island Attorney General. He assumed senior status on March 31, 1965, and served in that position until his death on August 10, 1968.[1]

Judicial career

First Circuit

On December 21, 1950, Hartigan was nominated by Harry Truman to a seat on the First Circuit Court of Appeals vacated by John Christopher Mahoney; he was confirmed by the Senate on January 2, 1951, and received commission on January 3rd. He assumed senior status on March 31, 1965, and served in that position until his death on August 10, 1968. His position was filled by Frank Coffin.[1]

District of Rhode Island

Hartigan was nominated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on January 11, 1940, to a seat on the Rhode Island District Court vacated by John Christopher Mahoney; he was confirmed by the Senate on February 1, 1940, and received commission on February 12. He served the District of Rhode Island until January 13, 1951. His position was filled by Edward Leahy.[1]
