John Hessin Clarke
John Hessin Clarke (1857-1945) was an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. He was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Woodrow Wilson on July 14, 1916. Clarke resigned on September 18, 1922. Before joining the court, Clarke spent his legal career in private practice in Ohio.[1]
Clarke was one of three justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Wilson. He served during The White Court and The Taft Court.[2]
Education
Clarke received an A.B. degree from Western Reserve College in 1877. He received his legal education by reading law.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
Supreme Court
Clarke was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Woodrow Wilson on July 14, 1916, to fill the seat vacated by Charles Evans Hughes. He was confirmed by the Senate on July 24th, and received commission that same day. Clarke resigned on September 18, 1922.[1] He was succeeded in this position by Justice George Sutherland.
Northern District of Ohio
Clarke was previously a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. He was nominated by President Woodrow Wilson on July 15, 1914, to fill the seat vacated by William Louis Day. Clarke was confirmed by the Senate on July 21st, and received commission that same day. He served on this court until July 24, 1916, when he was assigned to the Supreme Court.[1] Clarke was succeeded in this position by David Westenhaver.
