The following issues were listed on Ward's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • The Constitution: Senator McCain has a track record of supporting liberal nominees including Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court and Eric Holder as Attorney General. That’s why it’s crucial to Retire McCain and replace him with a Conservative Champion who will confirm conservative judges for federal courts, especially the Supreme Court.
  • Support for Our Troops: A military wife whose husband has served in Iraq, Kelli is a solid supporter of American soldiers and their families.
  • Privacy: As an AZ State Senator, Dr. Kelli Ward introduced AZ S.B. 1156, The Fourth Amendment Act, to prohibit agents of The State of Arizona from co-operating with federal agents in the mass surveillance of cell phone records without a "warrant that particularly describes the person, place, and thing to be searched or seized."
  • Gun Rights: The Second Amendment is one of our most treasured liberties, and it must be protected.
  • Immigration & National Security: Securing our border is one of the most pressing issues for Arizonans. That should be our first priority, not amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants.

Medicaid expansion lawsuit

Kelli Ward was one of the 36 Republican members of the Arizona State Legislature who signed onto a lawsuit brought by the Goldwater Institute in September 2013 against Arizona Governor Jan Brewer (R) over the expansion of Medicaid in Arizona under provisions of the Affordable Care Act.[17] Brewer announced her support for Medicaid expansion in Arizona in 2013, and by June of that year the legislature had passed a bill expanding Medicaid in the state .[18] In September 2013, the Goldwater Institute, a conservative think tank, filed a lawsuit seeking to block the law's implementation. They argued that the law contains a tax and its implementation under the control of the executive branch violates state laws enforcing the separation of powers.[17] In 2015, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled against the 36 Republican lawmakers and the Goldwater Institute, saying that the law contains an assessment, not a tax. The Arizona Court of Appeals upheld the Superior Court's 2015 ruling on March 16, 2017.[19]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Arizona

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
