The city of Montgomery utilizes a strong mayor and city council system. In this form of municipal government, the city council serves as the city's primary legislative body and the mayor serves as the city's chief executive.[1][2]
Mayor
The mayor is the city's chief executive. The responsibilities of the mayor include proposing a budget, signing legislation into law, appointing departmental directors and committee members, and overseeing the city's day-to-day operations. The mayor also possesses veto powers and represents the city on the state, national, and international levels.[1] The current Mayor of Montgomery is Steven L. Reed (nonpartisan). Reed assumed office in 2019.
City council
The Montgomery City Council is the city's primary legislative body. It is responsible for adopting the city budget, approving mayoral appointees, levying taxes, and making or amending city laws, policies, and ordinances.[1]
The city council is made up of nine members. Each member is elected by one of the city's nine districts to four-year terms.[1]

2023
The city of Montgomery, Alabama, held general elections for mayor and city council on August 22, 2023. A runoff election was scheduled for October 3, 2023. The filing deadline for this election was July 18, 2023.
2021
The city of Montgomery, Alabama, held a special election for District 1 on the city council on July 13, 2021. The runoff election scheduled for August 24, 2021, was canceled after one of the candidates withdrew. The filing deadline was May 25, 2021.[3]
The city also held a special election on March 23, 2021, for District 3 on the city council. A runoff election was held on April 27, 2021.[4]

Budget
The city's budget process operates by fiscal years running from October 1 to September 30 of the next year. The mayor is responsible for proposing the budget to the city council by August 20. The city council will hold public hearings to allow for public input in the budget process. The city council must adopt the budget no later than September 20.[5]
