Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Oregon Department of Education reads:[1]

The Oregon Department of Education fosters equity and excellence for every learner through collaboration with educators, partners, and communities[2]

Superintendent

The current Oregon Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction is Charlene Williams (nonpartisan). Williams assumed office in 2023.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of seven members that are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate. Five members represent each of the five Congressional district and the remaining two members are appointed at-large. Members are appointed to serve four year terms and are limited to two consecutive terms. The Board is responsible for setting educational policies and standards for Oregon's public schools, community colleges and 20 educational service districts.[3]
