Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Pennsylvania Department of Education reads:[1]

The mission of the Department of Education is to ensure that every learner has access to a world-class education system that academically prepares children and adults to succeed as productive citizens. Further, the Department seeks to establish a culture that is committed to improving opportunities throughout the commonwealth by ensuring that technical support, resources, and optimal learning environments are available for all students, whether children or adults.[2]

Superintendent

The current Pennsylvania Secretary of Education is Khalid Mumin (nonpartisan). Mumin assumed office in 2023.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is the largest in the nation with 21 members who are appointed to overlapping terms of six years. 17 members are appointed by the Governor and the remaining four members are the majority and minority chairs of the House and Senate Education Committees. The Board is composed of the Council of Basic Education and the Council of Higher Education. The Board reviews and adopts regulations that govern educational policies and principles and establishes educational standards for the Commonwealth.[3]
