A special election for the position of Louisiana House of Representatives District 80 was called for November 8. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 22.[1]
Louisiana elections use the Louisiana majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

The seat was vacant following Joseph Lopinto's (R) resignation on June 30, 2016. He resigned to take a job with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.[2]
Polly Thomas (R) was the only candidate to file for the special election. Since Thomas was the only candidate, the special election was canceled, and Thomas was declared the winner of the special election on July 22, 2016.[3]
