Richard Fred Suhrheinrich is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush. Prior to joining the Sixth Circuit, Suhrheinrich served as a judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Lincoln City, Indiana, Suhrheinrich graduated from Wayne State University with his bachelor's degree in 1960, from Detroit College of Law with his J.D. in 1963, and from the University of Virginia School of Law with his LL.M. in 1990.[1]

Suhrheinrich was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on April 18, 1990, to a seat vacated by Judge Albert Engel. The American Bar Association rated Suhrheinrich Substantial Majority Qualified, Minority Not Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Suhrheinrich's nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on June 11, 1990, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 27, 1990. Suhrheinrich was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on June 29, 1990, and he received his commission on July 10, 1990. Suhrheinrich assumed senior status on August 15, 2001.[1][3] He was succeeded in this position by Judge David McKeague.

Eastern District of Michigan

Suhrheinrich was nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan by President Ronald Reagan on September 6, 1984, to a seat vacated by Judge James Harvey. Hearings on Suhrheinrich's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 18, 1984, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on September 28, 1984. Suhrheinrich was confirmed on a voice vote of the United States Senate on October 4, 1984, and he received his commission the same day. Suhrheinrich resigned from the district court on July 13, 1990, upon his elevation to the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1][4] Suhrheinrich was succeeded in this position by Judge Nancy Edmunds.
