Robert Maxwell is a former Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia. He joined the court in 1965 after being nominated by President Lyndon Johnson. He then served on senior status until his death on November 20, 2010.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Indiana, Maxwell graduated from the West Virginia University College of Law, with his Law degree in 1949[1]

Professional career

Maxwell started as a private practice attorney licensed in the State of West Virginia in 1949 before becoming a prosecuting attorney in the State of West Virginia from 1953 to 1961. Maxwell was nominated by President John Kennedy as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia in 1961 and served there until his appointment to the federal bench in 1964.[1]

Judicial career

Maxwell on the recommendation of long-time U.S. Senator Robert Byrd, Maxwell was nominated by President Lyndon Johnson on July 19, 1965 to a seat vacated by Charles Paul as Paul went on senior status. Maxwell was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on August 11, 1965 and received commission on August 11, 1965. Maxwell served as chief judge of the court from 1965 to 1994 before later assuming senior status on July 19, 1995.[1] Maxwell was succeeded in this position by W. Craig Broadwater.
