2014
Sortwell's campaign website highlighted the following issues:[4]
Flood Plains
- Excerpt: "In short, many of our citizens are forced to purchase flood insurance through a federal government program run by FEMA. There is no competition and the government can arbitrarily raise the cost on taxpayers whenever they want. We need to put pressure on our federal Representative and Senators to bring competition and sanity to the program."
- Excerpt: "In the meantime, I propose that we provide a $500 tax credit for those who must buy flood insurance on their primary homes. The specifics can be further worked out in cooperation with other legislators but something must be done to help the people who are losing their homes due to direct government action."
Personal Privacy
- Excerpt: "We have a right to our own personal privacy in our own personal lives. Unfortunately, we have a politician representing Green Bay that feels otherwise. Recently, a local middle school did an activity with our children called "Crossing the Line." In this "game," many questions can be asked of the children including their sexual orientation, ethnicity, who has low self esteem, who is a republican/democrat, sexual activity and alcohol abuse in the family. This is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE and UN-AMERICAN. The government (and public schools are a branch of government) has absolutely no business asking these questions of adults, let alone our children."
- Excerpt: "So I wrote to our current politician and proposed that the state pass a bill preventing any such prying into our personal lives by the government. His response? He felt that local government should be able to gather that information if they wanted to. He could not be more wrong. No government, not state, not federal, not local, has any business getting this information from us or our children. If I am elected, I will propose a bill preventing such prying by an overreaching government."
Eliminate sales tax on utility bills
- Excerpt: "There is a reason the government does not tax food. It is because it is a necessity. Well, I sort of think that cooking my food is quite often a necessity as well, but that is not how the state sees things. Sometime, look at your utility bill. Quite often, you are paying tax on this bare necessity of providing food for your family and keeping your home at a comfortable temperature. We need to eliminate this tax for the working folks of Wisconsin."
Change how politicians are paid
- Excerpt: "Too often our politicians seem to have lost touch with the working folks. They do whatever they like and no matter how it affects us, they still take home a nice paycheck very week. I propose to change that. Let them feel the same hurt that we feel. Instead of paying them a set salary, let us instead pay them the average household income for the state of Wisconsin and then tack on a penalty based on current unemployment rates. This will hold our poltiicians [sic] accountable to actually working for the good of our wallets because it will affect theirs as well."
Two Lives at Stake
- Excerpt: "I am strongly pro-life. I have always been pro-life and have never wavered from that conviction. I believe that the life of the child begins with conception and he should be respected as a person."

Scorecards
A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.
Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
