Campaign themes

2014

Whitis' website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Pro-life: During my service as a judge and a prosecutor, there were many heartbreaking cases involving child neglect and abuse. I believe strongly that innocent life should always be protected from the moment of conception.

Pro-Gun: Since my time as a county prosecutor, I have owned a handgun. I don’t own it to hunt. I own it to protect my family. The 2nd Amendment isn’t just about hunting. It’s about guarding against tyranny and guaranteeing our rights as a free people to protect ourselves and our families.

Traditional conservative values: In my two terms as judge, I never once thought that I had the power to rewrite the law or write a new law from the bench, but there are liberal judges today who would seek that authority. The Constitution clearly gives that role to our elected representatives. The traditional family values and 2nd Amendment rights that we cherish and that have made our country great must be defended, or they will be taken away.

Fiscally conservative: Indiana has done a good job holding the line against wasteful government spending in recent years, but constant vigilance is required whenever public funds are spent. Like you, Sally and I spend our money carefully. Government should pinch pennies and live within its means the same as the rest of us. After all, it’s our money that government is spending.

Do more to get good jobs here in Southern Indiana: We have great communities and hard-working people. People shouldn’t have to move away from this area to find work, and our kids should have the opportunity to make a good life here. We need the state to focus on policies that not only help create jobs statewide, but bring jobs right here to Southern Indiana.

Fight to defend our casino revenue and our casino jobs: I served ten years on the board of directors of the Harrison County Community Foundation, so I have seen first-hand the difference that the money and jobs from the casinos has made in improving Harrison and Orange Counties. Twice now, Indianapolis politicians have tried to take the casino revenue away. They continue to pursue policies that will harm the local casinos and the revenues our communities get from them. I will fight to keep that revenue and those jobs here in our counties, where they do the most good.[2][3]
