Walter J. Gex III was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R). Gex assumed senior status on March 24, 2004, and ended his service when he died on November 12, 2020.

Early life and education

A native of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Gex graduated from the University of Mississippi with his bachelor's degree in 1962 and from the University of Mississippi School of Law with his LL.B. in 1963.[1]

Gex was first nominated by President Ronald Reagan (R) on December 4, 1985, to a new seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi created by 98 Stat. 333. Under Rule XXXI of the Senate, Gex's nomination was returned to the president at the sine die adjournment of the Senate on January 2, 1986. President Reagan resubmitted the nomination on January 29, 1986. Hearings on Gex's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 5, 1986, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on February 20, 1986. Gex was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on February 25, 1986, and he received his commission the next day. Gex elected to take senior status beginning on March 24, 2004. Gex's service ended when he died on November 12, 2020. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Louis Guirola.[1][2][3]
