Certain Pompeian artifacts have drawn debate as to whether they might be the product of Jesus-devotion within the walls of that small town. This article overviews the context for considering that issue in accordance with the best forms of current historiographical analysis and in light of the full spread of the evidence. To do otherwise is to mire the debate in a problematic web of outdated assumptions. When those assumptions are purged from the interpretive process and the full spread of evidence is taken into account, new interpretive possibilities open up, with important historical implications for our understanding of early forms of Jesus-devotion.
A study of Paul's ethical discourse regarding poverty in relation to his apocalyptic theology.

An ideology of slave identity is embedded in the frescoes of the "virtually ideal" context of Oplontis Villa A; by comparison, the "virtually ideal" ideology of Galatians 3:28 may have fostered occasional moments of relational novelty within some Jesus-groups of the first-century Roman world.

This essay outlines several features of Pompeii's civic life that might have helped foster an atmosphere in which Jesus-devotion (i.e., "Christianity") could find a way through the town gates and reside within them. This essay builds on and extends the new case for Jesus-devotion in Pompeii, as found in Longenecker, _The Crosses of Pompeii: Jesus-Devotion in a Vesuvian Town_ (2016).

This essay (for the Richard Bauckham Festschrift) explores how the Markan Gospel might have been heard among "the second church" -- a term devised by Ramsay MacMullen to reference "the half-converted" of the third and fourth centuries. This essay extends the term to the first century (by way of evidence of Jesus-devotion in Pompeii), and offers a reading of how the Markan Gospel (itself written "for all Christians," as Bauckham contends) may have addressed readers of "the second church" in the late first century.

This book debunks the myth that the cross was never used as a visual symbol in pre-Constantinian Christianity, bringing together the relevant material evidence demonstrating Christian use of the cross prior to Constantine. The artifacts presented in this book interlock with literary witnesses from the same period to provide a consistent and robust portrait of the cross as a pre-Constantinian symbol of Christian devotion. The material record of the pre-Constantinian period illustrates that Constantine did not invent the cross as a symbol of Christian faith; for an impressive number of Christians before Constantine’s reign, the cross served as a visual symbol of commitment to a living deity in a dangerous world.

This book demonstrates that Jesus-devotion was present in Pompeii prior to the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79. It challenges the consensus view that we have no evidence that Jesus-devotion was there (showing the ideological weaknesses of that view) and presents nearly two-dozen artifacts that reveal the presence of Jesus-devotion in the shadow of Vesuvius.
