The capacity building project for EU Election Observation
About us
Election Observation and Democracy Support (EODS) is the capacity building project for EU Election Observation. It is funded by the European Commission. The current EODS project has five main areas of support: • Strengthening the EU Election Observation Mission methodology • Building the capacity of EU election missions to assess the impact of social media on elections • Coordinating the communication strategy for EU election missions • Training election observation specialists in EU methodology and key election principles • Developing tools to support the operational aspects of EU election observation Election Observation and Democracy Support (EODS) follows the principles of the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation commemorated at the United Nations in October 2005. The current EODS III project is the sixth in a series of EU-funded projects supporting EU election-related efforts since 2002. The EODS III project builds on the activities and resources developed by those previous projects. It is implemented by a consortium led by GIZ, which includes Democracy Reporting International (DRI) and Memo98 as partner organisations. The EODS III project was launched in February 2021. The EODS team includes: Holly Ruthrauff (Team Leader), Francesca Boggeri (Social Media Strategy Coordinator), Claudia Aranda (Communications Coordinator) and Jordi Barrat (Training Coordinator) as key experts. Giorgio Grasso (Editorial & IT specialist) supports the project in information technology and editorial activities, Jasmine Santagati (Project assistant) is responsible for administrative matters and Maria Maouni (Finance Officer) is responsible for finance issues. Keep on following the EODS Website as well as the EODS Facebook page and LinkedIn for regular updates on the project’s activities and events.

📢 Find here todays' Preliminary Statement of the Election-Watch.EU Election Assessment Mission on the 6 - 9 June 2024 European Parliament elections 👉🏾 https://lnkd.in/diByBXKK
❗ Election-Watch.EU released its Preliminary Statement of the Election Assessment Mission to the European Parliament elections at a press conference in Brussels today: https://lnkd.in/diByBXKK ✔ Main take away: There is a clear need to further harmonise and safeguard democratic practices 🔴 Main preliminary findings: ✴ Disparities in suffrage rights, representation opportunities, campaign finance rules, and voting options persist with a need for further harmonisation to reduce inequality across Member States. ✴ Special measures foster electoral inclusion and representation among marginalised groups, with good practices serving as inspiration for further efforts to address serious remaining gaps. ✴ Publishing detailed election results, restricting anonymous and foreign funding, and labelling political advertisements enhance public trust but some Member States need to further improve transparency. ✴ Regulation and oversight of offline and online campaigns increase the accountability of political actors but require effective implementation and adjustment of different rules across Member States. ✴ Trust in national election administrations and voter registration systems remains high, while enhancing European data exchange and electoral dispute resolution is crucial. ✴ In response to mal-intended interference, various resilience mechanisms have been put in place. Free media and an active civil society are crucial for safeguarding democracy but need to be protected.

📢 🇲🇽 🗳️"The European Union congratulates Claudia Sheinbaum on her historic election as the first female president of Mexico and commends the Mexican people for their strong attachment to democracy demonstrated throughout the campaign for the general elections and on election day. The EU wants to further strengthen its strategic partnership with Mexico, built on common interests in many areas, and on a shared commitment to democracy, human rights and the rules-based multilateral global order. The EU looks forward to working with the newly elected authorities to deepen collaboration for the benefit of our citizens in all areas of mutual interest, such as economic relations, the green transition, social inclusion, security and the digital agenda." https://lnkd.in/gvAFVPK8

🆕 🗳️ ⚖️ Such a great honour! The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) issued a resolution recognizing national and international election observers as human rights defenders. We are very proud of this decision that - as we can read in the press release in the link below 👇🏾 👇🏾👇🏾 - highlights "the important role of election monitors for the defense of democracy and the rule of law. Through their activities, electoral observers stand up for civil and political rights including the rights to freedom of association, assembly, expression, access to information, equality before the law, and non-discrimination, as well as for the rights to a fair trial and to judicial protection."
