The paper investigates the graphic collection belonged to Pietro Stefanoni (1557ca. – 1642ca. ). If Cassiano dal Pozzo remembered a "book of drawing” from the Antique consisting of sheets "of exquisite beauty ", other evidences emerged from archival material and contemporary statements that allowed to track down the purchase of the "studio" of Pietro Antonio Tolentino, a clergyman of Cremona, and to focus on the inheritance and the way this precious material was dispersed. In the end, the letters and the annotations of the famous connoisseur Sebastiano Resta allowed to identify some drawings belonged to Stefanoni in the most important graphic collections in the world .

The paper sketches out for the first time the work of Pietro Stefanoni (1557ca.-1642 ca.) from Vicenza, who is known as the foremost publisher of prints by the Carracci. It starts from the tworemaining letters by Stefanoni to Ulisse Aldrovandi, now kept in the BibliotecaUniversitaria ofBologna. Jointly with other information in thepapersof the Bolognese naturalist, these letters allow to describe more precisely the activities of Stefanoni, a peculiar merchant who was also a great lover of antiquities as well as friend of‘virtuosi’,artistsand scholars; he also owned a famous‘museum’,dispersed by his heirs after death. The paper presents a first partial biography of Stefanoni based on these sources, on the correspondence of some of the most important exponents of the République des Lettres, such as Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc, on new archival materials from the Archivio di Stato and the Archivio del Vicariato of Rome and on the analysis of the dedications of the engravings he published. All this evidence allow us to place Stefanoni, in its right full place, in that lively world of antiquarians and savants which as of late has been widely researched.
