SitcomsOnline Digest: Netflix Orders Last Blockbuster Video Comedy Series; Party Down Revival Set at Starz

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! There is a lot to cover this week, and we've got the highlights, including a comedy series about the last Blockbuster, a revival of a Starz series, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB

  • Even though Netflix is the one that delivered that (seemingly) final fatal blow to Blockbuster, they have now ordered a comedy series starring Randall Park about the last surviving store. (IGN)
  • A premiere date has been set for How I Met Your Father. (Deadline)
  • Party Down, a short-lived comedy series from a decade ago that is either very memorable to people or something they've never even heard of, is being revived over at Starz with most of the original cast intact. (TV Series Finale)
  • The children of South Park are all grown up in the South Park: Post Covid special. (Deadline)
  • Dave Frishberg, who wrote Schoolhouse Rock! songs including "I'm Just a Bill," has died. (Entertainment Weekly)
  • Is TV news dead in America? A former New York Times CEO thinks so, as it is not evolving to audiences under the age of 60. (Deadline)
  • Add this to your list of things you never quite saw coming: a Days of Our Lives Christmas movie that will. (TV Insider)
  • One may have thought that Live in Front of a Studio Audience was done following the last "live" special in which the entire hour was interrupted with breaking news regarding the impeachment of Donald Trump, but they're trying again with remakes of episodes of Diff'rent Strokes and Facts of Life. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (NOVEMBER 20 - NOVEMBER 26)

  • Antenna TV is celebrating Thanksgiving weekend with every episode of Coach (unless, of course, your local affiliate preempts for pointless things like a simulcast of their news, in which case a few episodes will be missing).
  • Decades has a Riptide binge this weekend.
  • Columbo is leaving MeTV on Sunday, and in a rather unusual move by the network (which basically never airs special marathons of anything), they're actually airing a marathon of four episodes tomorrow.
  • Saved by the Bell  returns for a second season on Wednesday on Peacock.
  • South Park: Post Covid Special debuts on Thursday on Paramount+.
  • FXX, which seems to have abandoned all previous programming to become a 16 hour a day version of the Fox Sunday night lineup (the other 8 hours are filled with movies and informercials), is airing Thanksgiving themed episodes of these hits on Thursday.
  • Speaking of FXX, they added Futurama last week, leaving American Dad! as the only major Fox Sunday night animated series not on the lineup... yet (and that may have something to do with TBS airing new episodes).
  • In yet even more Fox animated comedy news (do we have enough of this today?), Adult Swim, oddly enough, is actually bringing King of the Hill back to their lineup starting Monday, sharing the series with new home FXX.

Antenna TV Summer 2020 Schedule; USA Network's Cannonball to Sneak Peek on NBC

Antenna TV

Antenna TV is making some minor schedule changes this summer. The changes begin on Monday, June 29, 2020, mostly affecting late night and weekends. Designing Women will air earlier now on weeknights, moving to 11:00pm & 11:30pm, shifting Coach to 12:00am & 12:30am. Other changes happening in late night are: NewsRadio moving to a later slot at 2:00am & 2:30am, while Family Ties and Growing Pains will air in the 4am and 5am hours, as It's a Living and Mork & Mindy are off the weekday schedule. Onto weekends, Benson and What's Happening Now!! will switch days from 5-6pm, with Benson now on Saturdays and What's Happening Now!! on Sundays. McHale's Navy moves to a later slot on Saturdays from 12am-1am, while Father Knows Best takes its Saturdays at 7-8pm slot. Lotsa Luck and The Paul Lynde Show move from Saturday late fringe to Sunday mornings from 6-7am, cutting the two-hour Soap block to just 7-8am. Benson will now follow from 8-9am, while Maude moves to 10-11am, replacing Welcome Back Kotter, now completely off the schedule. And finally, Dear John returns to the line-up and will air Sundays from 11pm-12am instead of Designing Women, while It's a Living is relegated to Sunday nights from 1-2am. That's all the changes, as everything else remains the same. In essence, Welcome Back Kotter is off the line-up, while Dear John returns. The Antenna TV lineup will change again in the fall with the addition of Who's the Boss?

MeTV Gets Original Series Starring Lisa Whelchel; Remembering Katherine Helmond of Soap and Who's the Boss? and Nathaniel Taylor of Sanford and Son

Lisa Whelchel

MeTV is proudly presenting its first original TV series, Collector's Call, premiering Sunday, April 7, at 10PM|9C. Hosted by Lisa Whelchel (Blair on The Facts of Life), the 13-episode unscripted series will introduce you to some of the biggest collectors of pop culture memorabilia in the country. These fans have amassed astonishing collections, covering everything from Winnie the Pooh to The Wizard of Oz, Coca-Cola paraphernalia to comic books… and so much more! While touring these extensive collections and learning about the collector’s fascination with their chosen items, Whelchel enlists the help of professional appraisers and experts to put an estimated value on each collection's worth.

Collector's Call

On Collector's Call, you'll find out the worth of everything from first-edition Harry Potter books with personal notes from JK Rowling to the original telephone used on The Dick Van Dyke Show -- not to mention locks of Abraham Lincoln's hair. Along the way, we discover collections featured in the Guinness Book of Records, alongside others valued in the millions of dollars. With the values established, the experts will try to tempt the collectors with a trade, offering a coveted item that would be the perfect addition to their collections. The collectors must then make an agonizing choice and decide how sentimental they are about their existing pieces…or how much they’re willing to give up for a new addition to the collection. Will they make a trade? It's the Collector's Call!

Comedy Central

Comedy Central, the #1 brand in comedy, announced a new late night series with David Spade; the return of Crank Yankers; a second season order for new, hit scripted series The Other Two; the first look at new scripted comedy South Side; and scripted projects in development with Naomi Ekperigin, Matteo Lane and Samantha Irby. The announcements come on the heels of Comedy Central's seventh consecutive quarter of year-over-year share growth. While Comedy Central remains the #1 full-day cable entertainment network with people 18-34, in 2018 the brand recorded its highest-rated year among women 18-49 since 2014, up +13% from the previous year. To start 2019, The Daily Show with Trevor Noah is the highest-rated late night series across all of TV among men 18-34.

Comedy icon David Spade will lead a new 11:30 p.m. series featuring his signature take on the pop culture news of the day (watch his announcement here). The yet-to-be-titled nightly series will include a rotating group of Spade's comedian and celebrity friends, while also incorporating field segments that mirror his popular Instagram stories. The show will follow The Daily Show with Trevor Noah on Monday through Thursday nights starting later this year. The show is executive produced by Spade, Alex Murray and Marc Gurvitz. Brad Wollack and Tom Brunelle of Free 90 Media serve as executive producers and showrunners. Comedy Central ordered 20 episodes of 30-minute comedy Crank Yankers, marking the beloved series' return to the brand.

The brand ordered a second season of the critically-adored 30-minute series The Other Two, which is already "Certified Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. Created and written by former Saturday Night Live head-writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, the Emmy-contending series stars Drew Tarver as a 28-year-old actor struggling to get better auditions than "Man At Party Who Smells Fart," and Heléne Yorke as his 30-year-old sister, who is struggling in general. As the two work toward finding themselves, their lives are completely upended when their 13-year-old brother, ChaseDreams played by Case Walker, becomes incredibly famous overnight. The Other Two also features Molly Shannon, who plays the siblings' fame-ready mother, Ken Marino as ChaseDreams' newly-hired manager and Wanda Sykes as Chase's publicist. The series airs Thursdays at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT. Scripted comedy South Side debuted its first look ahead of a summer premiere and teased the first season guest stars, which includes Lil Rel Howery, Nathaniel "Earthquake" Stroman, Jeff Tweedy, LisaRaye McCoy, Kel Mitchell and Ed Lover. The aspirational, scripted comedy is set in and around the working class neighborhood of Englewood on the South Side of Chicago.

Saturday nights in primetime get '70s fever with Three's Company, Barney Miller and Soap from 7-10pm leading into 90-minute editions of Johnny Carson. The new Sunday primetime features Coach, My Two Dads and Growing Pains from 7-10pm. Early mornings on weekends will remain intact from 5-9am, but with Jack Benny Program now at 6:30am. Before this schedule starts, Antenna TV celebrates the end of 2018 with a New Year's Eve of The Paul Lynde Show from 6pm-3:30am. And Antenna TV rings in 2019 with a New Year's Kick-Off Coach marathon from 5am-4am. View the full Antenna TV Winter 2019 schedule.

High Maintenance

Moving from Friday to Sunday night, High Maintenance returns for its nine-episode third season Sunday, Jan. 20 from 10:30-11:05 p.m. ET/PT. Created by Katja Blichfeld (who directs the season premiere) and Ben Sinclair, the critically acclaimed show uses The Guy, a marijuana dealer (played by Sinclair), to tell a variety of stories about New York lives, including his own. High Maintenance continues to paint a uniquely authentic portrait of New York with empathy and insight, telling amusing, surprising, sometimes moving and always poignant tales of denizens who are usually just faces on the crowded sidewalks of Brooklyn. The series is executive produced by Katja Blichfeld (Emmy(R)-winning casting director of 30 Rock), Ben Sinclair (Home Again, Sisters) and Russell Gregory.

This season, High Maintenance profiles everyday people whose stories of success, failure, love and loss intersect across New York, while delving deeper into personal life of The Guy, who is spending less time on his iconic bicycle and more time in "Steve RV," a set of wheels gifted to him last season. Featuring an intricate web of memorable returning characters and unforgettable new faces, the new episodes find New Yorkers exploring their relationship with the city, touching on such themes as death, parenthood, sexuality, fantasy, aging and more. Returning guest stars this season include: Amy Ryan, Gary Richardson, Arthur Meyer, Jen Harris, Micah Sherman and Abdullah Saeed. New guest stars this season include: Jemima Kirke, Margaret Cho, Guillermo Diaz, Rosie Perez, Kathleen Chalfant, Ken Leung and Annie Golden.

Young Sheldon

This weekend CBS, Showtime and The CW were up at the TCA 2018 Winter Press Tour. We will highlight the notable announcements. CBS announced that the hit freshman comedy Young Sheldon is the Network's first renewal for the 2018-2019 broadcast season. CBS All Access announced that Jack Reynor will star in its upcoming original drama series, Strange Angel. Reynor will play Jack Parsons, a brilliant and ambitious blue-collar worker of 1930s Los Angeles who started as a janitor at a chemical factory but had fantastical dreams that led him to birth the unknown discipline of American rocketry. Along the way, he fell into a mysterious world that included sex magick rituals at night, and he became a disciple of occultist Aleister Crowley. Parsons used Crowley's teachings of self-actualization to support his unimaginable and unprecedented endeavor to the stars.

SHOWTIME has announced the premiere dates of two of its returning drama series: the second season of I'm Dying Up Here will premiere on Sunday, May 6 at 10 pm. ET/PT, and the fourth season of the Golden Globe(R) Award winning drama series The Affair returns on Sunday, June 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. SHOWTIME has also announced that the third season of the hit drama series Billions will premiere on Sunday, March 25 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. And they reminded us that Homeland, which will return on Sunday, February 11 at 9 p.m. and Our Cartoon President, executive produced by multiple Emmy(R) winner Stephen Colbert, Chris Licht and showrunner R.J. Trump, and his merry band of advisors and family members. SHOWTIME released info for the new limited series Patrick Melrose, starring Oscar(R) nominee and Emmy(R) winner Benedict Cumberbatch. Set to debut later this year, Patrick Melrose is based on the acclaimed Patrick Melrose series of semi-autobiographical novels written by Edward St. Aubyn. This five-part limited series hilariously skewers the upper class as it tracks the protagonist's harrowing odyssey from a deeply traumatic childhood through adult substance abuse and, ultimately, toward recovery.

And finally for The CW, they released more midseason plans. The CW Network today announced dates for the series premiere of the heartfelt new comedy Life Sentence, as well as the returns of iZombie, The 100, and the final season premiere for The Originals. The season finale of the upcoming Black Lightning will air Tuesday, April 17 at 9:00pm ET/PT.

Jerry Van Dyke

Actor and comedian Jerry Van Dyke, who was best known for his role as Luther Van Dam in Coach, has died. He died on January 5 from heart failure at his ranch in Malvern, Arkansas. He was in declining health since being involved in a car accident two years earlier. Mr. Van Dyke was 86.

Van Dyke's television career began in 1962 with guest appearances as Rob Petrie's brother, Stacey, in The Dick Van Show. The series starred his older brother, Dick Van Dyke. Van Dyke was also a 4-string banjo player who performed several times on the show.

Jerry Van Dyke - My Mother the Car

He starred as Dave Crabtree in My Mother the Car, which aired for one season on NBC in 1965-1966. The series was about the misadventures of a man whose deceased mother Gladys (voiced by Ann Sothern) is reincarnated as a restored antique 1928 Porter. It also starred Maggie Pierce, Cindy Eilbacher, Randy Whipple and Avery Schreiber.

Van Dyke played widowed nightclub comedian Jerry Webster in Accidental Family. The 1967-1968 NBC sitcom starred Lois Nettleton, Teddy Quinn, Susan Benjamin, Ben Blue and Larry D. Mann.

13 Queens Boulevard

He appeared as Steven Winters in the short-lived 1979 ABC sitcom 13 Queens Boulevard. The series was about the diverse residents of a Queens apartment complex. It starred Eileen Brennan, Marcia Rodd, Helen Page Camp, Susan Elliot, Louise Williams, Karen Rushmore and Frances Lee McCain.

Coach

Van Dyke's best known role was as Luther Van Dam in Coach, which aired for nine seasons from 1989 to 1997 on ABC. Luther Van Dam was the beloved, yet befuddled assistant coach/defensive coordinator at the fictional Minnesota State University. The series starred Craig T. Nelson, Shelley Fabares, Bill Fagerbakke, Clare Carey (1989-1994), Kris Kamm (1989-1991), Kenneth Kimmins, Georgia Engel (1991-1997) and Katherine Helmond (1995-1997). Van Dyke received four Emmy Award nominations (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994) for the role for "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series".

He starred with Andy Griffith as Jerry Brownell in the short-lived 1970-1971 CBS drama The Headmaster. Jerry Brownell was the best friend of Andy Thompson (Andy Griffith). His character was a physical-education teacher and coach. The series also starred Parker Fennelly, Claudette Nevins and Lani O'Grady.

Van Dyke played the recurring role of Big Jimmy Hughes, the father of Jimmy Hughes (Mike O'Malley), in seven episodes of Yes, Dear. He made eight guest appearances as Tag Spence, the father of Frankie Heck (Patricia Heaton), in The Middle from 2010-2015.

Some of his other sitcom guest appearances included The Cara Williams Show, The Andy Griffith Show, That Girl, Good Morning, World, Gomer Pyle, USMC, Love, American Style, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, House Calls, The Love Boat, Newhart, Coming of Age, Charles in Charge, The Drew Carey Show, Grace Under Fire, Teen Angel, You Wish, My Name Is Earl, Raising Hope and The Millers.

Mr. Van Dyke was a talented and funny actor and comedian. He was perfectly cast as Luther Van Dam in Coach. He played the character to perfection. We thank him for the many laughs and entertainment he brought us during his long career. He will be greatly missed.

Antenna TV aired a Coach marathon on New Year's Day. The series airs weeknights at 11pm ET and 3am ET and weekends at 4:30pm ET.

Jon Paul Steuer

We also remember actor and musician Jon Paul Steuer, who was best known for his role as Quentin Kelly in Grace Under Fire. He died on January 1 in Portland, Oregon. The cause of death is not yet known. Mr. Steuer was 33.

Grace Under Fire

Steuer starred as Quentin Kelly in the ABC sitcom Grace Under Fire for three seasons and 73 episodes from 1993 to 1996. Quentin Kelly was the oldest child of Grace Kelly (Brett Butler). Steuer was the second actor to portray Quentin Kelly, as Noah Segan played him in the pilot episode. He decided to leave the show and quit acting due to the extensive press attention given to Brett Butler. Sam Horrigan took over the role for seasons four and five.

He guest starred as Alexander Rozhenko in a 1990 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. His other television guest appearances included Day by Day, Homefront and The Wonder Years. His film credits included Late for Dinner, When Love Kills: The Seduction of John Hearn (TV) and Little Giants.

Mr. Steuer was a good child actor. He decided to leave acting at age 12. He later worked as a musician under the name Jonny P. Jewels in Denver and Portland and owned his own vegan restaurant in Portland. He will be missed.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Mad About You Reboot in the Works?; Marathons and More for New Year's Eve and Beyond

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! We're in yet another holiday weekend with a slow news week, and once again, no new home media news or releases (we hope that those sections will be back next week though!), but we do have news about another potential reboot of a 90s hit sitcom, a look at the busy week ahead on the small screen, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Every series that was a hit in the 90s needs new episodes, or at least that's what Sony is thinking when it comes to Mad About You, as they want to bring that series back. (AV Club)
  • CBS doesn't seem to have any plans to bring back any of their successful 90s sitcoms (not that they really had that many to begin with), but they have been busy colorizing their old 50s and 60s sitcoms, and they've been performing rather decently when it comes to ratings. (Deadline)
  • Vox has their list of the 35 best TV episodes of 2017, so go take a look and check out what you may have missed from the shows you don't watch regularly. (Vox)
  • Make no mistake: sports leagues will do everything to cater to their TV audience, and that is demonstrated very clearly in the NFL cancelling their Sunday Night Football game that would have aired on NBC due to low ratings expectations that New Year's Eve would bring. (Yahoo)
  • Rose Marie, who was best known for her role on The Dick Van Dyke Show (and also starred in two seasons of The Doris Day Show), died this week. (CNN)
  • We mention some of them for your convenience in our Weekly Planner feature, but here is a larger list of all of the marathons that you can catch this weekend. (SitcomsOnline)

WEEKLY PLANNER (DECEMBER 31 - JANUARY 6)
  • Antenna TV is having a Newhart marathon all day on New Year's Eve, then that will be followed up with a Coach marathon on New Year's Day.
  • Antenna TV also starts their new completely revamped lineup on Tuesday, with several new series joining the lineup: Alice, Coach, Gimme a Break, Growing Pains, Head of the Class, The Hogan Family, Murphy Brown, and Silver Spoons, as well as the return of Benson, The Jack Benny Program, McHale's Navy, and Soap. You can find the complete printable schedule here.
  • Not included on that new Antenna TV lineup: All in the Family, Good Times, and Sanford & Son, but getTV will be airing them in their First Families of Funny block that will be airing weeknights starting Tuesday (after an all day marathon on Monday).
  • MeTV starts their new lineup on January 1, and while it isn't a complete makeover of the entire lineup like Antenna TV is doing, it does bring Diff'rent Strokes to the lineup.
  • If it's New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, it should come as no shock that Syfy is doing their Twilight Zone marathon.
  • Full House joins the Hallmark Channel lineup on Tuesday, after a marathon on Monday.
  • Not to be a broken record on series joining a lineup after a marathon on Monday, but the same can be said about The Nanny on COZI TV.
  • If you're looking for something fresh on TV this week as opposed to classic series joining a new network, most broadcast network primetime sitcoms return to new episodes starting Tuesday evening, with Fox even introducing a brand new comedy series (L.A. to Vegas).
  • Of course, it wouldn't be the weekend without the Weekend Binge on Decades, and this weekend it is Diagnosis Murder.

Fri-Yay: Is Hulu Moving Away From Comedy?; Antenna TV to Air New Year Kickoff with Coach Marathon

It's time for another edition of Fri-Yay! That means we will take a look back on some sitcom happenings in recent days or weeks or other fun sitcomy stuff. It's a sitcom lover's paradise! Happy Fri-Yay!

Hulu

by Vincent

This week, Hulu announced the cancellation of Difficult People. Difficult People was in its third season, and although it was never a huge hit, it had gained a dedicated following and was one of the first Hulu originals that seemed to grab a decent-sized following. After Difficult People came Casual, another half-hour comedy (with dramatic elements) that gained some minor awards attention and a dedicated fanbase. The success of those two shows was combined with Hulu's acquisition of The Mindy Project after it was cancelled by Fox. Hulu seemed to be the home of beloved, if not incredibly well watched, comedies. However, over the past few months, Hulu has quietly announced the end of nearly its entire comedy slate. Casual will end with its next season, The Mindy Project is currently airing its final season, and Difficult People was cancelled without even an announcement.

This is an interesting move considering quirky, off-beat comedies and dramedies were what made Hulu stand out from its streaming competitors. However, Hulu was undoubtedly the little guy in the streaming wars - until it became the first streaming service to take home an Outstanding Series award with The Handmaid's Tale this year. The Handmaid's Tale was a cultural phenomenon that toppled over everything else Hulu had done up to that point, so it's not especially surprising that they would be switching up directions. Still, it's unfortunate to see any service that was once big on comedy turn their back towards it, so let's hope Hulu still has room for some original comedies.

Coach

Huddle around your TV New Year's Day for 18-straight hours of friends, football and fun with Antenna TV's "New Year Kickoff with Coach" marathon. Special episodes include Fox and his team's appearances in the "Pineapple Bowl," "Popcorn Bowl," "Patriot Bowl" & "Pioneer Bowl." Kickoff the new year with Coach, Antenna TV's newest lineup addition. As we mentioned earlier this week, beginning January 2, 2018, Coach will air weekdays at 11pm ET and weekends at 4:30pm ET.

Antenna TV January 2018 Schedule Includes Gimme a Break! and Coach; Pop Launches Wednesday Comedies in January

Gimme a Break

Antenna TV, Tribune Broadcasting's multicast network, announced the addition of two classic sitcoms to the network's lineup. Coach and Gimme a Break! will join Antenna TV beginning January 2, 2018. Coach, starring Craig T. Nelson as college football head coach Hayden Fox, will air weekdays at 11pm ET and weekends at 4:30pm ET. Gimme a Break!, starring Nell Carter as Nell Harper, the housekeeper for a widowed police chief and his three daughters, will air weekdays at 4pm ET and Sundays at 7:30am and 3:30pm ET. Antenna TV, which airs in 131 TV markets across the U.S. reaching 86% of TV households, continues to aggressively invest in programming acquisitions. Earlier this year, Antenna TV added Welcome Back, Kotter, with Alice, Benson, Soap, Growing Pains, Silver Spoons, Head of the Class, Murphy Brown and The Hogan Family being added to its 2018 lineup. All join the lineup beginning Monday, January 2. In addition, The Jack Benny Program and McHale's Navy are returning to the schedule. With all these additions and returning series, the following shows will be off the line-up: Newhart, Dear John, The Patty Duke Show, Green Acres, The Jeffersons, All in the Family, One Day at a Time, Gidget, The Flying Nun, It's About Time, Good Times, Sanford & Son, The Addams Family and The Monkees.

Coach

Coach will launch with a New Year's Day marathon, as more info on that is to come. The new weekday schedule beginning Jan. 2 is all about similar pairings. Alice airs weekdays at 1pm and paired with Maude. Head of the Class is being paired with Welcome Back Kotter from 2-3pm, Gimme a Break! being paired with Webster, The Hogan Family being paired with Mr. Belvedere, Silver Spoons with My Two Dads, while Growing Pains and Family Ties join forces. In primetime, Three's Company and Soap are paired, while Benson and Wings follow. Murphy Brown airs at 10pm leading into Becker. And Coach at 11pm leading into Johnny Carson's new timeslot of 11:30pm, head-to-head vs. all the late night shows now (watch out ABC, NBC and CBS!). View the full Antenna TV January 2018 schedule with all of these new additions!

Let's Get Physical

Put on those Rose-colored glasses and prepare to laugh through the winter blues with two scripted comedies on Pop that prove (dysfunctional) families rule. Starting Jan. 24, 2018, Wednesday nights on Pop will feature back-to-back comedies, including the critically acclaimed fan favorite Schitt's Creek at 8:00 and 11:00 PM, ET/PT, followed by the original series premiere of Let's Get Physical at 8:30 and 11:30 PM, ET/PT. Pop's Wednesday night comedies boast Emmy(R) Award-winning talent and all-star casts, including Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, Daniel Levy and Annie Murphy returning as the Rose family in season four of Schitt's Creek, and Jane Seymour (Wedding Crashers), Matt Jones (Breaking Bad), Chris Diamantopoulos (Episodes) and AnnaLynne McCord (90210) in the new Let's Get Physical.

Schitt's Creek

As season four of Schitt's Creek begins, it seems the Roses have somewhat adjusted to the simple life in Schitt's Creek, the town that was once a thorn in their side. The family continues to lay down roots in pursuit of love, business and higher education. But of course, what would life for the Roses be without a little self-inflicted crazy? Series co-creators Eugene and Daniel Levy continue as executive producers. Let's Get Physical is a modern-day comedy capturing the zeitgeist of 1980s aerobics. The series revolves around middle-aged slacker Joe Force (Matt Jones), who makes a reluctant comeback in the fitness industry after his dad, the "Godfather of Aerobics," unexpectedly passes away and wills Joe the broke-down family gym with eccentric provisions attached to get his actual fortune and estate. Janet Force (Jane Seymour) is Joe's mom, who takes the reins of the family business in order to maintain their legacy and uses information and manipulation to guarantee that things go her way. Upon coming home, Joe faces his rival, Barry Cross (Chris Diamantopoulos), and his teenage love, Claudia (AnnaLynne McCord), who is now Barry's wife.

SitcomsOnline Digest: ABC Cancels Downward Dog, Prognosis for Still Star-Crossed Not Good; Complete Series Set Coming for Coach

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! Unlike last week, the news this week is far less controversial, though it seems that there is a lot of news about cancelled series or dead series that are still lingering on awaiting cancellation. Additionally, there is some big news about DVDs for the series Coach this week. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • ABC cancelled the series Downward Dog, which is not a big surprise since they seemed to be unsure of it anyway when they held off on debuting it until the summer, but what is surprising is that it seems that the co-creators are shopping around for other venues to continue the show. (Variety)
  • Meanwhile, another new ABC summer series, Still Star-Crossed, isn't cancelled yet, but it has been moved to Saturday and an official cancellation is expected soon. (Deadline)
  • The series Doubt lasted two weeks on the CBS schedule when it debuted in February, but it looks like CBS might be airing those remaining eleven episodes after all, once again as a Saturday burnoff. (Variety)
  • One thing that is safe through 2018 is the entire CBS daytime lineup, including a three year renewal for The Young and the Restless that means we'll at least see one soap opera live to see 2020. (CBS)
  • Hallmark is bringing your holiday wishes to life in July, as they celebrate Christmas in July in a few weeks. (SitcomsOnline)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • While the reboot (which NBC had actually picked up) will likely never see the light of day, Mill Creek is finally completing Coach on DVD, with Coach - The Complete Series. It will arrive on DVD on September 12.

TUESDAY (JUNE 27) HOME MEDIA RELEASE
The Jamie Foxx Show - The Complete Third Season

FOLLOW ME

Who to Follow: Jamie Foxx (Twitter), "Actor / Singer / Musician"
Claim to Fame: With the third season of his former sitcom, The Jamie Foxx Show, arriving on DVD on Tuesday, we're featuring Jamie Foxx this week. Jamie Foxx was not born as Jamie Foxx, and his real name is actually Eric Bishop. That wasn't good enough of a stage name for his standup comedy, so he decided to adopt the name Jamie Foxx, with Foxx being taken from one of his idols, Redd Foxx. His first claim to fame came when he joined the cast of In Living Color, and he also had a recurring role at the same time on Roc. In 1996, he got his own series, The Jamie Foxx Show, on the (then new, now defunct) network The WB, which ran for five seasons and 100 episodes. Lately, he has shifted his career more to films, where despite being a comedian, he has found his greatest success in dramatic roles, most notably as Ray Charles in the 2004 film Ray, where he was nominated for over a dozen major awards and won nearly all of them. He can currently be seen on the small screen as the host of a game show, Beat Shazam, which is airing this summer on Fox.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Contract Negotiations Ahead for The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family; New Blu-Ray Releases from Mill Creek; More Family Matters on DVD in July

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we are hearing about contract negotiations for two of the biggest sitcoms on TV that need to be worked out in short time, news of a Lost in Space reboot, and some new Blu-ray releases from Mill Creek. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • Two of the biggest sitcoms on TV, The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family, are about to start negotiations for new contracts for the cast, and while the prospects for The Big Bang Theory look very good, the Modern Family cast might be looking at somewhat shorter contracts. (Deadline)
  • This past season, there was an episode of The Carmichael Show that took on the Bill Cosby scandal, and as it turns out, NBC (which was in no small part built by the strength of Bill Cosby) fought against the episode. (Deadline)
  • Netflix has ordered ten episodes of the Lost in Space reboot. (CNN)
  • Gilmore Girls is coming to Netflix soon as a "reboot," but if you just want the original series, all seven seasons debuted on the service yesterday. (CBS News
  • Most people probably have no idea who Stuart Nisbet is, but as it turns out, he was a character actor who guest starred in 120 different TV series (mostly in the 60s and 70s, but his last TV appearance was a 2001 episode of The Practice), and he died this week at age 82. (MeTV)
  • Antenna TV will be featuring some of Norman Lear's favorite episodes of his series tomorrow. (SitcomsOnline

Who to Follow: Steve Harvey (Twitter), "Jump!"
Claim to Fame: Steve Harvey is, by all means, a jack of all trades. While his Miss Universe gaffe from last year may very well be one of his most well-known moments, he actually has quite an extensive background in, well, everything. He started out as a standup comedian, and hit it big in 1990 when he was named host of Showtime at the Apollo, a role that he kept for over a decade. In the mid-90s, he got his sitcom credits, first with the not-so-successful ABC sitcom Me and the Boys in 1994, but he did much better with The Steve Harvey Show (a sitcom), that ran for six seasons on The WB beginning in 1996. In 2000, he moved away from TV for a bit to host The Steve Harvey Morning Show, a very popular morning radio talk show that airs nationally, primarily on urban adult contemporary radio stations. But he returned to TV in 2010 as host of Family Feud, where he has brought the series to levels of success that it hasn't seen in decades, and in 2012, he returned with the syndicated TV talk show, The Steve Harvey Show.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Jimmy Kimmel to Host the Emmys; BBC Remaking Classic British Sitcoms; Mill Creek Announces New Releases of Universal Series

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, there are plenty of renewals in the works (it seems that the 2015-2016 season produced more stable series than past seasons as networks are renewing entire lineups), some news of some Mill Creek releases of some Universal library series, and more. Let's get started!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
  • We heard a few weeks ago that Jimmy Kimmel might be hosting the Emmys this year, and that was confirmed this week. (The Verge)
  • The BBC is looking to recreate some classic British sitcoms as one time specials, including episodes of two classic British sitcoms that became successful American sitcoms: Til Death Do Us Part (which All in the Family was based upon) and Steptoe and Son (which Sanford and Son was based upon). (BBC News)
  • Last week, we announced that Jason Lee is looking to make a return to television with a sitcom pilot for CBS, and now Alyssa Milano has been cast in the same pilot. (Deadline
  • The CW has announced their renewals for next season, and the list basically includes every scripted series currently airing on the network. (Deadline
  • CBS is also looking ahead at some of their renewals for next season, with their CEO is optimistic about "all five" of their freshman series returning next season (though it isn't exactly clear is meant by the fifth series, as we're doubting it is the almost certainly cancelled Angel from Hell). (Variety)

HOME MEDIA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Mill Creek, which was known for years as a low-budget outlet for public domain DVD releases, has been getting very serious about the DVD business in recent years and releasing much more high profile stuff from major studios (while still managing to keep low price releases). This week, they announced a deal with Universal, which will bring series including Miami Vice, Knight Rider, Coach, Necessary Roughness, Friday Night Lights, and Airwolf back to DVD. But there's more: some of these will also be released on Blu-ray for the first time ever. We do not yet know if Coach will be completed on DVD (it is the only series of the six announced that has not been completely released by Universal), but we hope to find out more soon.

He is the younger brother of Tia and Tamera Mowry, best known for their role on Sister, Sister, but he got his start on television just a few months before even they did with a 1990 episode of Who's the Boss? and eventually landed the recurring role of Michelle's friend Teddy on Full House. After Smart Guy, he landed a voice role on Kim Possible, and today he is one of the main characters in the series Baby Daddy.

Antenna TV Fall 2015 Schedule with Family Ties; NBC Not Moving Forward with Coach Revival Series

    Family Ties

Antenna TV has announced its fall 2015 schedule and it will begin on Monday, September 14, 2015. The newest addition to the weekday line-up will be the '80s sitcom Family Ties. The Michael J. Fox comedy will air weeknights at 10pm & 10:30pm and weekends at 8pm & 8:30pm. Also joining the schedule will be two short-lived comedies airing on the weekend: My Mother the Car Saturdays from 1-2pm and It's About Time Saturdays from 2-3pm. If you are not familiar with the latter series, it's a caveman series that aired from 1966-67 and is from creator Sherwood Schwartz, and used sets, props and incidental music from Schwartz's other television series in production at the time, Gilligan's Island. Leaving the schedule for now will be Adventures of Rin Tin Tin, Flipper, Gidget, Here Come the Brides, McHale's Navy, The Monkees, and The Patty Duke Show. As always with Antenna TV on new schedules, there will be a lot of time changes to existing shows... Too Close for Comfort returns to weekdays, airing 5-6pm. View the full Antenna TV Fall 2015 schedule and discuss these changes.

    Coach

NBC has decided it is not moving forwards in its revival of Coach. The network gave the updated sitcom a 13-episode straight-to-series order last spring and mentioned it during the upfront. The series was slated to premiere midseason 2016. NBC was not happy with the creative decisions being made by Universal Television with the series. The premiere episode was already taped. With this news, Coach may still live on. Universal Television is reportedly shopping it to other networks (perhaps original network ABC?) and streaming services (i.e. Netflix). In this new revival, NBC described it as Craig T. Nelson reprising the iconic role that earned him an Emmy in this follow-up to the beloved series that ran for nine seasons. With original creator Barry Kemp at the helm, Hayden Fox's story picks up 18 years later when the retired coach gets back in the game to assist his son, who was just hired as head coach at an Ivy League university in Pennsylvania... where they know nothing about sports. Between dealing with the eggheads on campus and his hostile daughter-in-law at home, Coach will soon learn that he's not in Minnesota anymore. Talk about a Hail Mary!

SitcomsOnline Digest: Bill Fagerbakke to Return to Coach; New Netflix Series to Reunite Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we've got developments on the upcoming reboot of Coach, news of a new Netflix series reuniting That '70s Show cast members, news of DVDs of The Michael J. Fox Show, and more. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
    • When the Craig T. Nelson sitcom Coach returns to air with new episodes on NBC next year (words that we never imagined we would be saying, but are glad to be saying them), the character Dauber (played by Bill Fagerbakke) will be there as well.. (Hollywood Reporter)
    • Netflix, which is becoming as important as the major networks in new series, announced a new series this week that will reunite That '70s Show stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson. (CBS News)
    • How I Met Your Mother has been out of production for over a year now, but that didn't stop it from winning an International TV Audience Award for best comedy. It is the first time that the award, which has gone to The Big Bang Theory and Modern Family in the past two years, has gone to a sitcom that is no longer airing new episodes. (Deadline
    • From 1983 until 2004, ABC, CBS, and NBC all maintained an unusual stability in the anchor chair for their evening news programs. In the past 10 years, ABC has gone through four anchor changes and CBS has gone through three. Now, NBC is going through their second in the past 10 years, as Lester Holt officially takes over for Brian Williams on Monday. (NBC News)
    • For fans of the CBS series The Millers and The McCarthys, there is a little bit of good news from CBS: they're bringing back both series starting on July 4, but it is only to burn off the remaining episodes that were produced (but not aired). (SitcomsOnline)

Claim to Fame: We're featuring another That '70s Show cast member this week (after Kurtwood Smith from last week), and it just so happens that this one actually did make news this week with the announcement of a new Netflix series. But going back to the beginning, Danny Masterson's first role was on an episode of Jake and the Fat Man. From there, he appeared as a guest star on series such as Cybill, Roseanne, Party of Five and NYPD Blue, along with a string of B (if not C) movies in the early 90s. His first big role (and true claim to fame) came in 1998 with the role of Hyde on That '70s Show. Most recently, he starred for three seasons on the TBS sitcom Men at Work. This week, it was announced that he will reunite with Ashton Kutcher in an upcoming Netflix series.

SitcomsOnline Digest: Craig T. Nelson to Become Coach Again; New Growing Pains Release from Warner Archive; More Complete Series from CBS

Welcome to SitcomsOnline Digest! This week, we have news of how NBC is planning to bring back an ABC series that ended almost two decades ago, news of more Growing Pains releases from Warner Archive, and news of several complete series sets on the way from CBS and Mill Creek. Let's get going!

HIGHLIGHTS FROM SITCOMSONLINE.COM AND AROUND THE WEB
    • It seems that every week, news about new pilots and remakes of old sitcoms come, and very few actually materialize... but in the midst of it all, NBC has ordered a 13 episode follow-up series to ABC's sitcom Coach, and the follow-up will again star Craig T. Nelson. (Hollywood Reporter
    • If you wanted to take a road trip on Black Friday this year but would rather not leave home, then fear not: TLC has you covered as they are planning to take a 12 hour live road trip on Black Friday. (Slate)
    • A few months ago, we mentioned that Fox was being sued by actor Frank Sivero, as Sivero claims that the character of Louie on The Simpsons was based upon him, and it appears that Fox is fighting back. (Deadline)
    • NBC has set premiere dates for some of their summer and fall sitcoms. (Deadline)
    • It should be no surprise to anybody who watches Antenna TV that The Jeffersons and One Day at a Time are coming in April, but now, we've got the April lineup. (SitcomsOnline

Claim to Fame: This week, we have a bit of an unconventional person to follow... actually it is two persons, because they're twins and sort of come in pairs. In fact, many may not even recognize who they are by their name, but they played the roles of Nicky and Alex, the twin sons of Jesse and Becky on the TV series Full House. Both of them are no longer little kids and are actually 24 years old. And the only claim to fame that they have as actors were their roles on Full House, neither of them did any other acting before or after the series. These days, Dylan is not completely out of the entertainment industry. In fact, he has been working as a sound effects artist, most recently in the HBO series Game of Thrones and Starz series Black Sails. Blake, on the other hand, is completely out of the entertainment industry and has taken on a decisively non-entertainment role as a firefighter in Atlanta. But what do both of them have in common? They are perfectly happy and willing to cherish their very short sitcom careers with fans on Twitter.
Pick of Blake's Tweets: "To everyone: As far as I know, the new show is not a "Fullhouse Reunion ", it will revolve around a few characters from the show though." (August 30, 2014)
Pick of Dylan's Tweets:  "#funfact for the most part, i wore green and blue on Full House, and @BlakeTW wore red and yellow." (January 17, 2012)
