John McNaughton’s ‘The Harvest’ Burning This April!!

The Harvest

At long last you’ll all get to see Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer director John McNaughton’s The Harvest, which stars Michael Shannon, Samantha Morton, Peter Fonda, Natasha Calis, and Charlie Tahan.

It will be opening at the IFC Center and available on VOD April 10, 2015.

Patrick Cooper was a huge fan after seeing it out of the Fantasia Film Festival this past summer.

In his first film in nearly 15 years, the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer harks back to the depravity that made his 1986 debut a horror milestone. But less based in reality, The Harvest is closer to a fairy tale from Grimm’s darkest corners. Maryann (an impressive Natasha Calis) moves in with her grandparents after she’s orphaned. Desperately lonely, the preteen sets out to befriend a neighboring deathly ill, bed-ridden boy (Charlie Tahan), despite the outright disapproval of his mother (Samantha Morton). Maryann’s persistence pays off, however, and during a series of secret visits she gradually uncovers some seriously sinister goings-on in the house… Morton as the boy’s overprotective surgeon mom is the stuff of great screen villainy—at once utterly monstrous and tragically desperate—so much so that she makes even frequent heavy Michael Shannon, as the more subdued dad, pale in comparison.

Mike Mendez’s Debut Feature ‘Killers’ Coming to Uncut Blu-ray

Before making films like The Convent, The Gravedancers, Big Ass Spider, Lavalantula and Don’t Kill It, our buddy Mike Mendez made his feature debut with a film titled Killers back in 1997, which is now headed to Unrated Director’s Cut Blu-ray from Synapse Films.

Synapse previews, “In 1997, director Mike Mendez and co-writer/star Dave Larsen collaborated on the brutal, uncompromising and wickedly funny Killers, a movie that divided audiences at the 1997 Sundance Film Festival but then had a hard time finding an audience due to scattershot distribution. Having gained a cult following in the years since, Synapse Films is bringing Killers to Blu-ray in its complete, unrated director’s cut on October 8, 2024!

“Once upon a time, the James Brothers, Odessa (Dave Larsen) and Kyle (David Gunn), murdered their parents in their own beds. Now they’ve escaped from Death Row and are on the run on a stormy night, looking for a place to hide out. They invade the home of the Ryans, who seem like a typical American family and should be easy to control. But there’s something not quite right about this brood—the women seem more attracted than frightened by these notorious murderers in their house, and Dad (C.T. Miller) has secrets of his own.

“Things get violently out of hand as the James boys find the night not going as they expected…and there are even more surprises waiting in the basement!”

Special Features include:

  • Original unrated director’s cut scanned and restored by Multicom Entertainment Group
  • Audio commentary with director Mike Mendez and author/horror journalist Michael Gingold
  • Original promotional trailers
  • Alternate Ending
  • Liner notes by critic/writer Heather Drain

Killers is a highly stylized crime/horror hybrid that also puts a darkly satiric spin on America’s obsession with violent perpetrators. You can pre-order the Blu-ray from Synapse today.
