This review surveys studies of men and masculinities in anthropology and ethnography from other disciplines, as well as theoretical frameworks and debates among anthropologists and other relevant scholars in the field. It also aims to assess developments in these studies since an earlier Annual Review of Anthropology article was published on this subject. By considering the ethnographic boom in men and masculinities studies across the globe since 2000, increasingly authored by anthropologists from the Global South, this review considers anthropology's singular contributions topically and conceptually—for example, masculinity and militarism, men and public health, gender inequalities, and trans* social movements—including through innovative research in biological and linguistic anthropology and archaeology. Throughout, this article reflects on the extent to which anthropologists have moved (and if they should have moved) beyond the study of women or men to instead explore gender,...

Insofar as gender is still so often equated with women alone, the move from Women in Development to Gender in Development has changed very little. Men as a human category have always been present, involved, consulted, obeyed and disobeyed in development work. Yet men as a gendered category in a feminist sense - involving unequal power relations between men and women and between men - have rarely been drawn into development programmes in any substantial way. This paper addresses conceptual and operational obstacles to men’s involvement in gender and development, drawing on interviews with over 40 representatives of development organizations in Britain and the USA in 1999.

Even a cursory review of cross-cultural studies of men and masculinities could result in the depressing conclusion that men are dominant in most if not all societal spheres in most societies today and historically, and therefore that there must be something essentially human (and even more fundamentally, something biological) about unequal gender relations if there is such a common pattern. Yet the same comparative analysis that might persuade us to believe in the ubiquity of male supremacy can also, in the classic anthropological tradition of the negative instance, be inspiring and hopeful as we examine a myriad of exceptions in societies around the world today and in the past. Indeed a closer reading of contemporary and historical gender relations forces us inexorably to an appreciation of the profound diversity, tolerance, and cooperation in gender relations, often alongside and in simultaneous contradiction to the more often remarked upon power imbalances and divisions.

This paper is about military conscription, conscientious objection, and democratic citizenship in the Americas, especially in the United States (U.S.) and Mexico, today and historically. In the United States there is at present no formal military draft, but when they turn eighteen all men, including those who reside illegally in the United States, must nevertheless file their names and contact information with the Selective Service System (SSS) office of the federal government. As there is no formal conscription in the United States today, only those who enlist and then have a change of heart can apply for conscientious objector (CO) status. In Mexico, all men who are born in the country or become naturalized citizens are obligated to report for possible military service, and one in three young men are chosen by lottery and must actually serve a year in the Mexican Army. Mexican law does not recognize the right to conscientious objection and for this reason there is no recorded history of young men in Mexico refusing to serve in the military for religious or moral reasons.

In the working class neighborhood of Santo Domingo, Mexico City, infants and, even more, toddlers are said to suffer from mamitis, mommy-itis, when they are physically separated for too long from their mothers. Mamitis affects children when they are held by others with their mothers nowhere to be seen, as well as when their mothers are in plain view. The expression mamitis is generally used tongue-in-cheek, often with a grin on the speaker’s face. It is not a biomedically recognized diagnosis, although, as we shall see, perceptions of mamitis do reflect the influence of biomedical ideas regarding children’s’ “natural” demands on and attachment to their mothers. Thus, while the term is used in a half-kidding manner, it would be quite wrong to dismiss how seriously the affliction is taken—humor can be used as a way of lamenting the psychological anguish brought on by unpleasant circumstances.

In this interview, anthropologist Matthew Gutmann discusses gender violence, especially with respect to antiwar veterans of the Iraq War, and the image they had to face of themselves as invaders and occupiers of a foreign land. The veterans developed a strong allegiance with civilians in Iraq, as they were facing the brunt of the war's terrors.

In the context of new world orders threatening from above and new popular struggles breaking out from below, description and analysis of mass protest in Latin America is confronted with the need for comprehensive theories of social conflict. To account for these developments among the subaltern classes, Latin Americanists are increasingly turning to the views of James C. Scott regarding &dquo; everyday forms of resistance. &dquo; I hope to show that important aspects of his model hinder our efforts to understand and develop ...

The study of men-as-men shows that there has been no groundswell demand by men to study themselves; on the contrary, the study of men and masculinities has arisen with the feminist movements, the gay and lesbian movements, and because of their demands to transform gender inequalities in all their cultural, social, economic, and political aspects. This essay is a contribution toward an analysis of gender focused on the “lost” subjects in gender studies: as actors with volition and agency, men are engendered and engendering, too.

Implicit in this quip are certain culturally derived notions of science, society, power and progress. 1 This article compares the views of British historian of science Joseph Needham regarding China with those of Chinese physicist Wen-yuan Qian regarding science and culture in the West. Abstract This article examines the correlation between migration to the United States from Mexico, ethnicity, and changing gender relations among Mexicans on both sides of the international border. For example, the idea that Mexican society is homogenous and static, and therefore that only when they arrive in the United States do men and women from Mexico confront challenges to gender roles associated with traditionalism and patriarchy, is demonstrably false if nonetheless persistent. Using changing gender relations as ...

■ This article explores recent forms of Mexican popular nationalism in the wake of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Drawing on ethno graphic research in a colonia popular of Mexico City, I maintain that analyses of nationalism and class, including within critical theory, should re-examine cul tural questions pertaining to national sovereignty within contemporary globaliz ation. Responses to the Free Trade Agreement among the urban poor in Mexico, for instance, indicate a growing disparity between elite and popular perceptions regarding issues such as democracy and nationalism. Although grassroots leftist politics in the last two decades have been successful in overcoming a previous neglect of daily needs and realities for the poor, the article also argues that recent popular social movements have too often ignored debate on questions of trans nationalism and nationalism.

Anthropology has always involved men talking to men about men, yet until fairly recently very few within the discipline had truly examined men as men. This chapter explores how anthropologists understand, utilize, and debate the category of masculinity by reviewing recent examinations of men as engendered and engendering subjects. Beginning with descriptions of four distinct ways in which masculinity is defined and treated in anthropology, special attention is paid to the relations of difference, inequality, and women to the anthropological study of masculinities, including the awkward avoidance of feminist theory on the part of many anthropologists who study manhood. Specific topics discussed include the diverse cultural economies of masculinity, the notion of cultural regions in relation to images of manhood, male friendship, machismo, masculine embodiment, violence, power, and sexual faultlines.

In early January 1997, I was standing outside a corner tienda [shop], in my Mexico City neighborhood of Colonia Santo Domingo, sipping Coronas with my friends Marcelo and Marcial to celebrate the New Year. A third friend, Marcos, who lived next door to the tienda, stopped by. Having just been on a family vacation to Yucatan and taken a forty-eight-hour bus ride to return to Mexico City, he was tanned and exhausted, and he couldn’t wait to tell us, especially Marcial who was originally from Yucatan, about the trip. Two things stood out in his mind as highlights of the journey: the archaeological ruins he had seen at Chichen Itza, and the topless beaches he had visited on Isla Mujeres. Just as Marcos was beginning to describe the details of each encounter, a little boy walked up to him and asked for some coins to buy candy in the tienda. I looked at the boy, who was then about three years old, and asked him his name. He looked me in the eye and replied that it was Ruvaalcaba. Ruvaalca...

As more people are now living in the urban areas than ever before, the physical defining characteristic of the twenty-first century is unquestionably that of the urban thanks to the major shift across the world toward service-oriented economies and info industries. Despite its long history of agrarianism, contemporary China is no exception. The recent shift toward urban-based economies is a direct consequence of the country's rapid economic growth of the past three decades. Today's China consist of more than two dozen so-called " megacities, " or cities with a population of ten million or more. What's the best way of researching contemporary urban China? The goal of this workshop is to build intuitive point of departure to study contemporary urban China keeping in mind not only the socio-political and geopolitical situations in the region, but also traditional beliefs, and the cultural soft power of which the region is both absorbing and creating its own version.

This workshop introduces ethnography as a much-needed lens in the study of contemporary China, aiming at creating a deep and critical conversation across the field of contemporary Chinese studies, especially urban studies, anthropology, cultural and media studies, and urban planning and architecture.
