Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF)

About us

The Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) supports its more than 80 member countries in advancing their sustainable development goals through effective laws, policies, and regulations for the mining sector. We help governments take action to develop inclusive and gender-equitable practices, optimize financial benefits, support livelihoods, and safeguard the environment. Our work covers the full mining life cycle, from exploration to mine closure, and projects of all sizes, from artisanal mining to large-scale operations. Guided by our members’ needs, we provide in-country assessments, capacity building, technical training, publications, and events to advance best practices, peer learning, and engagement with industry and civil society. The International Institute for Sustainable Development has hosted the IGF Secretariat since October 2015. Core funding is provided by the governments of Canada and the Netherlands.

It was an honour to be asked to write the foreword to this amazing and important book that was years in the making. 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground shows not only what is possible by reusing our natural resources in unique ways to create natural, social and economic value for communities that once relied on mining operations for their livelihoods. The book shares some of the world’s best and most unusual post-mining land uses including a brewery, a cake mine, an opera house, racecourses and golf courses, ski slopes, vineyards, reconstructed ecosystems, and the impressive Eden Project. It is a fascinating book that I highly recommend to those interested in human ingenuity. #IGFmining #Mineclosure #EdenProject

The story of the Eden Project is the story of a worked-out mine that was transformed into something incredible. But it’s not the only one. Published today, 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is a new book from the Eden Project, co-written by environmental specialist Dr Peter Whitbread-Abrutat and the Eden Project’s in-house editor, Dr Rob Lowe. Readers will take a tour of some of the world’s best examples of old mines being transformed to give the habitats and communities around them new futures. There are over 102 examples ranging from inspiring world tours of heritage and tourist attractions to wildlife habitats and new industry uses – it offers a glimpse into a promising future where the remnants of mining can be converted from a liability to an opportunity. When mines and quarries close, they shouldn’t become scars on the landscape or sources of pollution or leave their working communities on the brink of collapse. With imagination and determination, they can offer something radically different — hope. 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is a non-profit publication sponsored by Rio Tinto, Anglo American, BHP and Newmont Corporation with the support of The Land Trust, RESOLVE and ICMM. 102 Things to Do with a Hole in the Ground is available now 👇 UK orders: https://bit.ly/3zA4NTf International orders: https://lnkd.in/eMCWxXaE

As part of the IGF’s partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), we co-organized a workshop on formalizing artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) to improve environmental, health and safety, and socio-economic outcomes. This workshop was held in Indonesia and supported ASEAN member countries’ interest in better integrating ASM into the wider economy to promote sustainable mining development in the region. Policy Advisor II | Tax and Mining at IGF/IISD

📑📌Since 2019, the IGFMining and the OECD Tax in partnership with the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF), the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Centro Interamericano de Administraciones Tributarias - CIAT offer a high-quality course focusing on international taxation and its application to the extractives sector. The course provides government officials with an opportunity to catch up on recent international tax developments applicable to the extractive industries, giving them practical ideas to improve mining revenue collection in their countries, and foster open discussions with government officials from other resource-rich countries. We started with our live discussions last week engaging with over 300 participants across all regions. Some pics from our live session for Module 1 delivered for the Latin-American and the Caribbean region below! Looking forward to the following weeks! #internationaltax #miningtaxation #tax4dev
