Improving tax revenue in developing countries SECO committed CHF 28.5 million through 2028 to help developing countries reform their tax systems. Low tax revenue hinders these countries' ability to invest in social and economic development, provide important public services, and meet the public’s basic needs. Moreover, effective tax systems encourage civic engagement and reduce corruption, while supporting the growth of SMEs. Since 2023, the City Resilience Program has supported citizen-science heat mapping campaigns in cities across #SouthAfrica, mobilizing volunteers and local partner organizations to build the datasets needed to effectively combat extreme urban heat. 🔥 This week we had the pleasure of presenting the outcomes of the heat mapping campaigns to municipal leaders in three of those cities: #BuffaloCity, #CapeTown, and #Tshwane. The results of the studies will help inform the design of strategic climate resilience actions and reduce the impacts of heat in these communities. 🌆 Alongside the presentation of the results, World Bank resilience specialists are hosting three technical seminars on heat-related topics selected by city officials: - how to develop an effective urban shading strategy - strategic urban greening to reduce heat stress, and - extreme heat early warning and health messaging systems. We look forward to more fruitful collaborations with our partners in South Africa in the coming year! Fostering eco-friendly industrial parks in Vietnam SECO, UNIDO and Vietnam's Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) successfully transformed numerous traditional industrial parks into eco-industrial parks (EIPs) across five key localities in Vietnam. This initiative (phase 1 is running from 2020 to 2024) aimed to demonstrate solutions for improving economic, environmental and social efficiency of the industrial sector and integrate development regulations into relevant mechanisms and policies. The eco-friendly practices resulted in substantial savings of CHF 2.9 million annually, thanks to reduced energy, resources, and materials consumption.
