This is a well-known Palestinian user and vetter explaining that they are completely confident that the pornbotlike ask sent by an account with a verified fundraiser was a result of “embarrassing behavior/a mistake in online interactions.”

This would be more plausible if it was a one time occurrence, but this blog sent the exact same ask to (at minimum) three separate accounts:

These asks are all identical, to the letter - that’s how I found them. This is, needless to say, very strange for any person to do on tumblr, least of all someone who is raising money to try and protect their family from a genocide. glitzyboo, for example, does not post images of themselves or reblog anything remotely close to NSFW, so it’s very very odd behavior for someone to tell them they are “pretty enough” for anything. It is even more suspicious when you consider the very long history of porn bots sending sugar daddy scam asks on this site.

I don’t know what is going wrong here - who is mistaken about what, what part of the process is breaking down, but the story told in the above post, that this was an embarrassing social faux pas that happened one time and was sent by a real person who was horny, does not hold up to scrutiny.

Ever tried a video call? With the amount of asks they send I bet they have enough data for a 10 second call. 

You are not qualified to run campaigns involving millions of dollars. I have seen screenshots that even within your own community you call each other zionists and racists whenever you cannot agree what to do with the money. How irresponsible and childish is that? There are scammers partaking in your vetting process. You are keeping money away from real people in need and instead promote scams. hey @badjokesbyjeff i know you’re mad about the warranted pushback you got for doubting the veracity of a suspicious message but the reason i know you’re only engaging with this to defend yourself and not because you sincerely care about people being scammed is because you yourself are not particularly invested in this process either nor are you making accurate claims whatsoever.

how are palestinian bloggers on here running (not sharing or vetting, mind, but ‘running’) campaigns for “millions of dollars” — what emboldens you to make such a claim? how so? even if you believed the above campaign was a scam falsely vetted, do you think every single one of these campaigns is going to the same person or the same scamming entity? do you believe gofundme has zero standards or requirements of its own? i personally had multiple fundraisers i shared on lists hussein has added, and these are real people i know in real life, so do you understand the damage you do when you casually claim that he is a scammer and all of these gofundmes are scams and people should only donate to [checks link] UN crisis relief that is not reaching most of gaza?

i am not invested in whether or not basel ayyad in particular is a real person because i cannot personally vouch for him, but in fact your debunking (which is “he sent the same sleazy messages to at least THREE people” which like—have you ever clicked on a link that sent a message to every single one of your contacts? have you ever met a horny arab guy? lol) doesn’t stand up to scrutiny either beyond doubling down on questioning the methods of verification, which as many bloggers have mentioned, they don’t state in detail because it makes it easier for scammers to get around them. it’s possible bassel is in gaza and sending inappropriate asks, such people exist, and it is possible he clicked on the pornbot links and got hacked, but it is entirely incorrect (and deeply harmful) to claim that bloggers on here are “in on the scam” and every gofundme shared is therefore a scam.

as a matter of fact, there were multiple scammers on here in november/december, and it was palestinian bloggers including hussein who called them out then, not you.

if you were invested in this process at all, you would know that the issue with the claim was never whether a particular campaign in your inbox was real or not, but that you painted every single campaign (and those vetting them) with the same casual brush, despite the fact that your methodology for claiming a campaign is a scam is completely inapplicable in this situation, and by your metric real people i have met and fundraised for who got out of gaza with funds raised through gfm would be considered scammers as well (this links to a longer post i’ve written explaining precisely why this process is so difficult).

if you were actually invested in this, instead of sharing some shitty UN link that is objectively the least impactful way to help anyone in gaza, you could have linked to gazafunds.com which is an alternately run website by diaspora palestinians with vetted campaigns (but of course, you, who has no idea what makes a campaign real or not would be more likely to shed doubt on these campaigns as well instead of donating to them) or any of the grassroots organizations or municipalities currently on the ground in gaza, or initiatives like e-sims for gaza, which do reach people immediately and quantifiably.

yes, there is a possibility not all of these campaigns will be legit. this is a risk everyone donating and everyone participating has accepted, because like you said—this is work being done by volunteers whose people are going through a genocide. saying “you are not qualified to do this work” and recommending the fucking UN is some callous bullshit, because they are being forced to do this work due to the genocide. they have been extremely transparent about their goals, their limitations, and their efforts.

there is no qualification for “my people are dying” beyond what gofundme, community and paperwork verification, and personally going through each campaign one by one already offers. gaza is also a small area with a tight-knit familial network, which means community verification through families knowing one another is not only applicable but the most reliable form of verification, as opposed to some vague top-down UN derivative that is no longer functioning in most areas in gaza. in a situation like this either you step up and try to help to the best of your capacity, or you don’t, because orgs like the UN and the red cross have mostly just left people to die. if you were invested, you would know this too.

most of all i am replying because everything that bloggers such as yourself have tried to use to “debunk” a campaign is actually pure speculation—i have seen real people do everything you think is suspicious, including spamming inboxes (this has also happened on twitter), copy-pasting and auto-translating pleas for help, using stock photos, and asking people abroad to manage their campaigns for them. these are all things people in a warzone with a poor grasp of english are likely to do. this is why we promote these campaigns—not because we’re more naïve than you, but because we’re more knowledgeable than you and we understand the risks of doing so vs not doing so. you are under no obligation to promote a campaign you find suspicious, but you are under some moral obligation to retract your presumptions and slander against people who are trying to do their best during a genocide, and you are certainly under some moral obligation to learn why people are now resorting to gfm campaigns instead of fucking UN links.

You harassed a Gazan genocide survivor off of Tumblr (he’s had his account for over a decade, and on it, he’s documented the horrific losses his family has suffered even before October 7th), doubled down on accusing all GFMs vetted by Palestinians on Tumblr of being part of an organized scam ring by hyperfocusing on the one GFM on that list that’s sketchy (no regard, of course, to how this might effect the hundreds of other families trying to survive a genocide), quietly deleted all evidence of yourself being racist to the genocide survivor you fueled a harassment campaign against, never apologized for any of this, and now, after you’ve gotten to play the victim for a bit, you’re doing a victory lap and celebrating the harm you’ve done.

But before you go back to your regular scheduling of stealing posts from Reddit and pretending they’re your own, I think you’re followers should know what the backlash against you is about.

This is really not my story to tell. It feels very uncomfortable to shared Ahmed’s history like this, and to see how he’s been forced to be this public about his loss and trauma in order to be believed (and then to see you, still doubting him!).

Ahmed is now trying to adjust to a life in Egypt, still has most of his friends and family in Gaza, and is struggling just to cover his own living expenses in the city he’s now a displaced refugee in.

The fact that you, from the safety of your home (Ahmed’s has been turned to rubble by Israeli bombs), felt so comfortable dragging him and other Palestinians through the mud like this is despicable.
