Comment I find the map disturbing - Europe at the present time with a German Empire? Do we want this as a FI? I am not sure. The missing L is less problematic, this is a typical glitch. --Kritzolina (talk) 12:59, 3 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Info King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark on a state visit to Sweden in May 2024. They arrive with the barge Vasaorden across Saltsjön from the Danish royal yacht Dannebrog and disembark at the Logård Stairs at Stockholm Palace where the Swedish royal couple receive. A old and traditional way of receiving heads of state arriving by sea. Same ceremony 1897. It was King Frederik X’s first State Visit following his accession to the throne in January, and the first incoming State Visit from Denmark since 1985.

Info Helgumannen is a fishing station near the nature reserve of Langhammars at Fårö island (Gotland, Sweden). Created, uploaded and nominated by -- ArildV (talk) 09:22, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Just some info about this place. Fårö is known worldwide for its stark, desolate and minimalist limestone beaches. This photo captures that perfectly with the simple fishing huts and one lone person. This is where Ingmar Bergman lived and made many of his films. He came to the island when he was scouting for locations, fell in love with the place and stayed the rest of his life. This is about as quintessential Fårö as you can get in a photo. --Cart(talk)21:34, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Neutral To be honest, the composition doesn't appeal to me. The horizon in the middle and too many empty spaces are not advantageous. --XRay💬09:08, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment It makes no sense that people are here saying wow outweighs sharpness but in nominations it's the opposite Henrysz (talk) 20:50, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I know we also have other grizzly images (not linking them now because I want to have a good night's sleep) and stuff, but this is too far. I'm not going to examine the details of this image for quality, but this nomination is unethical. --Zzzs (talk) 20:23, 29 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment The problem of this picture is not the subject. Visit the top prizes of photojournalist competitions in famous newspapers and you will find many striking images of this kind. Also in wildlife. COM:FPC is not a care bears platform, and fortunately we have already promoted several FPs of bombings (example) in the past. But here, the quality, the wow factor and the light are not exceptional in my opinion -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:12, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but atomic bomb tests killed people indirectly through radiation sickness not well understood at the time. It may not be relevant, but the nominator is a great admirer of US Armed Forces. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:44, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
FPC guidelines: "The meaning of the image should be judged according to the cultural context of the image, not by the cultural context of the observer. An image "speaks" to people, and it has the capacity to evoke emotion such as tenderness, rage, rejection, happiness, sadness, etc. Good photographs are not limited to evoking pleasant sensation" -- Basile Morin (talk) 12:09, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And the vote takes into account the context of the observer. Given that the nominator is a great admirer of the US Armes Forces, I don't really think that he wants to evoke rejection or sadness through his image. El Golli Mohamed (talk) 14:33, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Having a user on Commons who has a special interest in military matters is useful. That means he can dig through piles of such images for the best ones and nominate them here, and we don't need to see all those depressing images. --Cart(talk)15:38, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Comment I come back to my old standpoint that a really good encyclopedia needs good images for all articles, however distasteful they are, not just cute or nice things. Cruelties need to be shown correctly too. This photo is good in that it shows how bleak, colorless and depressing this kind of destruction is. Compare with what the news show from Gaza and Ukraine. Unfortunately, most of us have been brainwashed by movies and games to think that war should look "exciting" like this: Hollywood version. --Cart(talk)15:01, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anyone here would vote in admiration of this. There can also be a "wow" in the very accuracy of an image. There is a language barrier here in thinking that "wow" is only defined in a positive way. There can also be "wow" for the skill off the photographer to capture something difficult very accurately. "Wow" is the ability for a photo to evoke emotion (good or bad) in the viewer. --Cart(talk)15:13, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't speaking about "wow" according to Encyclopædia Britannica, but as used in the FPC guidelines as quoted by Basile earlier in this discussion. For years now, we've abridged that long sentence into the short word "wow". Whatever nationality we have, we are all WikiMedians. Right? --Cart(talk)21:39, 30 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose While there is merit in having disturbing images on Commons, I see no reason to feature this image. BTW, the claims made in the caption of the image are not verifiable by Wikimedians and may be false. --Tagooty (talk) 02:03, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment: beautiful scene, but there are a few technical issues: the sky is a bit noisy and has a couple of dust spots, while the whole image is very tilted to the right. Would support if these are corrected. --The Cosmonaut (talk) 16:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The parts of the image around and especially below (between the foliage and the ground) the tree are unnaturally bright. --C messier (talk) 21:21, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Suggested version@Красный, The Cosmonaut, and C messier: Dear reviewers, I have reduced the slight halo in the treetop and then adjusted the overall tonal correction accordingly. If you like the result, you can use this edit for an update. Please see the SwissTransfer link. While editing, I realized that the glow in the treetop might have been due to some overly well-intentioned post-processing. But that's just my guess. Best regards, -- Radomianin (talk) 21:24, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think the halo mentioned by our fellow photographer C messier refers to the glow of the treetop that I removed in my suggestion. This can be clearly seen in a direct comparison of the two versions. Best, -- Radomianin (talk) 21:50, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Comment I don't think is FP quality, but there doesn't seem to be any issue with the colour of this male Harlock81. It seems that this butterfly shows colour-variation, possibly seasonal. Charlesjsharp (talk) 14:11, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose It might have been a very impressive view. Probably everyone has ever visited the world through the window of a plane, and thought "wow, these illuminated clouds are so dreamy from above". Unfortunately, the pictures are seldom extraordinary, due to the thick layers of glass between the camera and the subject. Hazy landscape in that case, and dull colors are probably the result of the material. Hot air balloons are more convenient, and some drones sometimes that can fly high -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:11, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Basile Morin: Why offer impossible alternatives? There are no hot air balloon operators in the Azores, and the maximum drone flight height in Portugal is legally limited to 120 m. --The Cosmonaut (talk) 17:37, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but the context was certainly not a photo session. Most probably transportation. Like when you shoot from a train, it's difficult too -- Basile Morin (talk) 04:23, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure there are some photos that can only be reasonably obtained from a train, with associated drop in technical quality. And that's exactly what context is. --The Cosmonaut (talk) 04:42, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose The light is not so good, for "one of the best pictures of the site". Hazy. The shadows are too dominant in the mountains, especially at the left. Harsh light. It's almost a contrejour, since the shadows seem to be leaning in our direction. Incidentally lack of sharpness in the corners -- Basile Morin (talk) 02:38, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Basile Morin: Thanks for your comments. I have tweaked the exposure and shadows, plus mild sharpening. Is it better? Note that the direction is to the south, the sun is shining out of the top left corner. At high altitude, lighting tends to be harsh owing to the clear air. Tagooty (talk) 03:16, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure you've uploaded the correct file? I honestly see no difference at all, even looking carefully at full size. Although they seem to be different files in megabytes. So I wonder what has changed -- Basile Morin (talk) 03:40, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

An FP is an extraordinary image with wow-factor. This image does not have an unusual pose/activity/colouration/etc that catches my attention. It merits QI and VI. --Tagooty (talk) 08:44, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Charlesjsharp: An FP is one "of the finest on Commons". The violet-backed starling is common throughout Africa. Your FP of the strikingly-coloured male has set a high bar. An unexceptional image of a drab female does not cross the bar IMO. I would support an unusual image of a plain brown bird, or an image of a rare brown bird. --Tagooty (talk) 02:57, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I agree the setting is not exceptional. Perhaps the FP bar should be raised; as long as there is consensus. We are promoting dozens of unexeptional small brown birds standing on brown earth or sand these days. Thinking about consistency, what do you think about the recent nominations of the white butterfly and brown locust? Neither are rare species. Charlesjsharp (talk) 10:06, 27 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I feel that the FP bars for many subjects are getting lower over the past 2-3 years. I wonder how many reviewers compare with FPs in the gallery before voting? Perhaps, its just that I'm getting older and more critical! Tagooty (talk) 03:25, 28 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
