Well, according to editcount I have almost 500 edits in Commons as of August 8, 2005. I've uploaded more than a hundred pics about Mexican history and politics (most of them in the public domain), I've built categories, written copyright info, etc. I would like to clean the Mexican cats since most of them appear written in Spanglish, so being an admin would really easy the load. Comments: Administrators (on my understanding) should enforce consensus decisions made in project (not personal preferences). Why do you not follow Commons talk:Templates for galleries#Voting about language representation? EugeneZelenko 14:13, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, first of all, I am willing to change the language representation in all my contribs if that is required, but the way I got it that the iso code as text is preferred, not something that should be enforced in every single page. Sadly, the vote was held during my summer break so I didn't have a chance to explain our situation. In Spanish, several iso codes such as de (German) or en (English) are actual words and they are somehow "problematic". de: means "of" or "from" and en: means "in", so if you get a picture, say, a company building and they see de: Deutschen Post they tend to think that it was taken from the actual website of the company, and that leads to a bunch of misunderstandings. Not everyone visiting the galleries is familiar with iso codes and not every Mexican casual visitor is used to see pics of his/her country under a foreign tag, so I used the icons to emphasize that it should not be taken literally.
The icons are, in fact, a representation of the same code and the text format used in the text labels is terribly unintituive for them, since is just a word in bold, think of seeing from:, in:, etc. in every single picture. But then again, if that needs to be changed I will do so, although I would preffer to change the color of the text at least. Nobody needs a rainbow, but at least something in drak grey or light blue, etc. Ruiz 17:30, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't see where the problem is… In Portuguese "de:" also means from. But I never thought it meant "from" wherever I read it... So if they see a foreign flag in a picture of their country and see a weird language in from of the flag, they'll think it is in that country. LOL. That hypothetical guy must be really stupid. The flags also has another problem, some languages are spoken in more than one country. -PedroPVZ 04:51, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I didn't get your point, but no one has used flags nor is advocating flags. What I used for a while were the icons with the iso-code, such as this one: Deutsch. I changed them all to text already in the cats I created, and the galleries are gonna be done by the weekend. I still think this is nitpicking when there are bigger priorities in the Mexican cat as a whole.Ruiz 06:33, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
