Summary

[edit]
Description A mediaeval building in Melton Mowbray, dating from the 1380s, when it was a chantry house for priests - it is next to St Mary's church. By the 1540s it was owned by Thomas Cromwell, who lost his head after arranging his boss Henry VIII's disastrous 5th marriage, to Anne of Cleves, who received the place as part of the divorce settlement. There is no evidence that she ever paid a visit here though. It's now a not-bad pub; the sign here show Anne with King Henry and his cronies [Cromwell and Cranmer?] above.
