Español: Retrato de Diego del Corral y Arellano (1570-1632), que fue oidor del Consejo de Castilla, caballero de la Orden de Santiago y catedrático de la Universidad de Salamanca. Viste toga negra, detalle que junto a los papeles alude a su oficio en la Justicia, luce la cruz de Santiago bordada en su pechera, símbolo de su origen noble, y se acompaña de un sombrero, que habla del derecho de don Diego a cubrirse como característica de su alto rango social. Cada detalle de la composición, lejos de ser anecdótico, ha sido cuidadosamente elegido por Velázquez, con objeto de caracterizar socialmente a su modelo. La técnica empleada por el pintor, que combina la proximidad del personaje con un fondo y un suelo neutro y un ligero halo alrededor de la cabeza del personaje, sitúan esta obra dentro del estilo de Velázquez de comienzos de la década de los años 30. Este cuadro forma pareja con el retrato de su esposa Doña Antonia de Ipeñarrieta y Galdós, y su hijo don Luis (P01196). Ambos permanecieron en manos de la familia hasta que fueron legados al Museo del Prado por la duquesa de Villahermosa. |
