[edit]DescriptionThames Wharf Plan (16053457825).jpg |
On 13 January 1925 a pile-driving ceremony was held at Thames. The Minister for Marine, GJ Anderson, drove the pile, and R Coulter, Chairman of the Thames Harbour Board, gave a speech explaining that it had become possible to start building the wharf, as part of a greater harbour improvement scheme, as the Board had raised sufficient funds. The new wharf was to be on the site of the old Burke Street Wharf. Plans were also in place to provide a private railway siding to the wharf, shown in this drawing. It was intended that Thames would become an important sea port, especially for export of produce from the fertile Hauraki plain. Unfortunately dredging was not enough to prevent the eventual silting up of the Thames harbour area. By the 1960’s only the piles remained, and now the ruined wharf has become a popular tourist photo opportunity. The drawing is taken from a New Zealand Railways file held at Archives New Zealand Auckland Regional Office QAAD A954/20a For further information please email [email protected] For updates on our On This Day series and news from Archives New Zealand, follow us on Twitter twitter.com/ArchivesNZ Material from Archives New Zealand |
