Title
Wilhelm Ostwald and his students, 1892
Description
Four copies of a black and white photograph featuring Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932) standing with colleagues in front of a blackboard. Identified in the photograph by handwritten annotations from left to right are Wagner, Barth, Hadrich, Schlibs, Bersh, Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932), Fanjung, Bach, Georg Bredig (1868-1944), Ernst Otto Beckmann (1853-1923), Gruneberg, and Bradenburg. Georg Bredig (1868-1944) studied physical chemistry at the University of Leipzig directly under Ostwald. After receiving his doctorate and studying with others, Bredig returned to Leipzig as Ostwald's assistant in 1895. There Bredig researched colloids and created ‘Bredig’s arc method’. Bredig would work at the University of Leipzig until 1901 when he became an associate professor at the University of Heidelberg.
