The original Wiki:InterWiki concept tries to network wikis: Interlink them such that visitors can move from one wiki to the next as easily as possible.

: The goal of InterWiki technology is to make it as easy as possible to move from one wiki to another. We want seamless integration.

The following technological features are currently in use to support this:

InterLink (URL abbreviations) – for the sites we often link to, URL abbreviations are defined on the InterMap
SisterSites – when showing a page that also exists on Meatball, a logo at the bottom will let you know about it
NearLink – links to pages which do not exist here but do exist on Meatball will link to the Meatball page, as defined on the NearMap
NearSearch – searching wikis on the NearMap

Ideas:

DistributingWiki – make local copies of popular near pages
DistributedEditing – editing a certain page on various wikis and the wikis merging them automatically

Related implementations:

MetaWiki – interwiki search (for page titles)
Implementation of NearLinks for TWiki [1] [2]. The result looks like automatic InterLinks. This particular implementation also does DistributedEditting?.

Theoretical stuff:

WikiNameSpace – NameSpace problems and solutions in the wiki context
MeatBall:InterWiki – similar ideas on Meatball
[WikiNodes:FrontPage WikiNodes] – When there is Futures:MassUseOfWiki, we will need to find out quickly, what is on topic, off topic, and where things actually are on topic. Wiki nodes are pages that communicate all this information to visitors.

We’re following the MailingListThenWiki community forming pattern; if you are generally interested in InterWiki, please consider joining the mailing list. You can participate on the wiki too, but edits are few and far between.

We’re also following the SplitWiki community forming pattern, using InterWiki technology.
