Nestled a thousand miles off the east coast of Africa, Fregate Island is a true jewel of conservation. Its surrounding waters are marine protected areas aimed at preserving and restoring coral health. Like many other marine ecosystems, its reefs are vulnerable to environmental changes and require continuous protection and management.
Raja Ampat, a remote archipelago in Indonesia’s West Papua province, is one of the planet’s last wilderness areas. Its countless islands form the heart of the Coral Triangle, where 75% of earth’s hard coral species can be found.
Kunfunadhoo, or Soneva Fushi, is a true paradise, nestled in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The atoll is home to one of the largest groups of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean and offers an incredibly rich diversity.
After months of meticulous work on Fregate Island, Seychelles, our 1 year-long coral restoration experiment comes to an end. We have been busy initiating our latest project here in the Maldives. Located on the stunning island of Soneva Fushi in the Baa Atoll, we have partnered with the Soneva Foundation to build what will be one of the largest coral nurseries in the world powered by mineral accretion technology (MAT).

Fregate Island, Blancpain and Coralive.org are pleased to announce the release of the latest short film on their experimental coral restoration initiative, a project that is part of their long-standing Ocean Commitment program to restore and preserve the marine environment in the Seychelles.
We are back on Fregate Island in the Seychelles for the 3rd phase of our coral restoration project to continue our research and conservation work on the local reef supported by the Mineral Accretion Technology (MAT). This time we will focus on finding the most cost efficient way to power and maintain electrified reef structures.
Since 2018, Blancpain and Fregate Island Private have joined forces to study, restore and preserve the marine environment around the island. Coralive.org and BlueNomads.org led the field projects with additional support from the Green Islands Foundation, and the Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust.
As an international organization, we happen to fly quite a bit in order to get to our project locations. Often times we get confronted how we comprehend this rather contradictory fact of producing CO2 and help corals to regrow that are suffering due to elevated levels of CO2 in the atmosphere in the first place.
In December 2019, Coralive.org, in conjunction with the REEFolution foundation and Wageningen Research University, began the establishment of a scientific report to test the effects of the mineral accretion process.
Press Release December 2018 North Male Atoll, MALDIVES Recognizing the International Year of the Reef 2018, in this year’s final month, Coralive.org created a unique, 8,000-fragment-strong Mineral Accretion Coral Nursery in North Malé Atoll, Maldives.
FREGATE ISLAND, SEYCHELLES – November 2018 – Fregate Island Private, a luxury eco retreat in the Seychelles, is pleased to announce its partnership with Coralive and Blancpain Ocean Commitment—the beginning of a two-year study of coral restoration methods.
In the latest project, Coralive in cooperation with the local Maldivian NGO “Atoll Volunteers” on the island of Naifaru, managed to set up a coral nursery for fragment propagation. This included adding two different ways to nurse coral pieces which will be reintroduced to the existing reef once they reached a decent size.
Coralive has partnered with La Luz Beach Resort in San Juan, Batangas in the Philippines and is working on coral structures that will be placed in front of the resort. Consisting of tunnel and dome shaped steel frames, the coral structures will have an area of about 150m2.
Coralive.org will use the mineral accretion technology to power several structures outside of a breakwater that protects the beach of the Royalton Negril Hotel in Jamaica.
