🌍From Syria to DW: Anas' Journey When a selfie with German Chancellor Angela Merkel went viral, Anas Modamani was thrust into the spotlight overnight. This iconic image became a symbol of Germany's welcoming culture. Anas fled Syria shortly before the war, seeking safety and a new life in Germany. The turning point in his life came when he started giving interviews to numerous media outlets. Through these interactions, he not only shared his story but also discovered a new passion: journalism. He studied business communication at the HTW Berlin and at the Berlin School of Journalism, completed internships at rbb, ZDF - and at DW. Anas was already familiar with DW from his time in Syria and later improved his German through its language programs. “I immediately liked the international working environment and the friendly colleagues,” he says. What started as an internship at DW evolved into a permanent position. Today, Anas works in the support department and has truly found his place: "I enjoy the varied work, the open doors, and the excellent development opportunities. DW has become my home." While Anas misses his homeland, he acknowledges that much of it was destroyed during the war. His heart aches for his family, whom he stays connected with through social media, sending them his posts and reports on the life he has built in Germany. Looking ahead, Anas is filled with ambition: "To continue working for DW, to make more of [his] own contributions, to report on human destinies" — not merely as a former refugee, but as a dedicated journalist. 🎉 When the classroom becomes a newsroom: Short video series "DW goes to school" launched on DW channels: The community debates with students in Ghana and Germany about their lives, millions are already watching.       🌍 It’s a virtual cultural exchange between students from Germany and Ghana, in which surprising answers are given to seemingly simple questions. Students talk about what kind of uniform they wear and what’s for lunch.      ➡ More serious topics such as colonialism and teaching about the Holocaust in history class are also covered. What is so special about this series is that it is created FOR and WITH young people.        And: The DW community can watch short videos of the students answering each other's questions about their lives and daily routines in the two countries – via TikToks, as Reels, or in YouTube Shorts – and join in the discussion. "In Tunisia, girls have to wear uniforms and boys don't, I hate it so much," writes one Instagram user.        📱 The 19-part short video series, produced in collaboration with Culture and Documentaries and Programs for Africa, can now be seen on "The 77 Percent," "DW Berlin Fresh," "DW Euromaxx," and other digital channels. 🚀 Introducing 'Frau, vui kuda?' - a new vodcast highlighting women's stories and rights       DW's new Russian-language vodcast Frau, vui kuda? (Frau, what now?) presents compelling stories of women from Russia and Germany challenging gender norms.     Designed for Russian-speaking women aged 25 to 40, the show addresses central questions on women's rights in Russia. It features insightful discussions with female leaders and experts, including German politician of Russian origin Dr. Anastasia Vishnevskaya-Mann and Russian political scientist Ekaterina Schulmann, among others.     Reflecting on their decision to start the vodcast, co-hosts Natalia Smolentceva and Kseniya Safronova recount: "We both moved from Russia to Germany nearly ten years ago. Comparing the ways women live and behave here made us reflect on gender roles and equality. Nadja Scholz highlighted DW's commitment to quality journalism and factual accuracy, emphasizing that human oversight remains crucial.   Marie Kilg illustrated how AI can be used even more efficiently at DW, citing translation and adaptations as examples. Sebastian Jannasch underscored the importance of clearly identifying AI’s strengths and weaknesses and applying it in areas that benefit from automation and large-scale data-processing. 🌍 Reporting from exile: "Despite the work ban in Russia, the voice of DW's Russia correspondents remains audible." About two years ago, our DW studio in Moscow was forced to close, and our journalists had their press accreditation revoked. DW was labeled as a foreign agent by Russia. Since then, the team of about 10 journalists, led by Bureau Chief Juri Rescheto, has been reporting from exile in Riga. Our DW Ambassador Fanny Facsar recently spoke with Juri about the challenges of continuing their crucial work under these circumstances. #journalism #pressfreedom
