All subjects underwent two flexible sigmoidoscopies within one week. Each curve demonstrates the observed richness as additional clones are sampled and error bars represent 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Rarefaction curves from all three subjects in experimental group (A) show a decreased richness of bacterial phylotype in samples collected after bowel preparation compared to that in samples collected before bowel preparation (p<0.01, paired t-test).
