Rarefaction curve of phylotype richness.

All subjects underwent two flexible sigmoidoscopies within one week. Each curve demonstrates the observed richness as additional clones are sampled and error bars represent 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Rarefaction curves from all three subjects in experimental group (A) show a decreased richness of bacterial phylotype in samples collected after bowel preparation compared to that in samples collected before bowel preparation (p<0.01, paired t-test). No difference of richness is found in the two control groups with two un-prepped flexible sigmoidoscopies (p>0.05, B and C). (Sub represents subject. FS1 represents the first flexible sigmoidoscopy and FS2 represents the second flexible sigmoidoscopy.).
