Hiya there!! I’m Eliza, full-time cartoonist and full time cartoon character!

If I’m not making cartoons, I’m either watching or writing about them! I adore all things animation, whether it’s the practice itself or exploring its rich history. Don’t be afraid to drop in and say hi!

I got to design tonight’s Patrick Show title card! As to be expected, our BG team really made a gorgeous job out of it. I remember spending so much of my time drawing up fake title cards for shows like Camp Lazlo, so it’s pretty surreal to do the real McCoy

pat not bad for a guy that never took a lesson in his life! < this is like. nothing. but i'm gonna brag about it here since i'm sure i have some followers who remember my Lazlo title cards pretty surreal

this evening, on August 5th, 2024, around 8:50p.m. or so, i had an epiphany. a revelation that has chilled me to my core

i have spent the past HALF DECADE DRAWING AND VIEWING AND INTERPRETING PORKY’S EARS COMPLETELY WRONG. I AM SO MAD. GOBSMACKED. BETRAYED. I HAVE SPENT NEARLY 5 YEARS THINKING THAT THE RIGHTMOST EXAMPLE WAS HOW HIS EARS WORKED

TO MAKE IT WORSE! to make it worse. i have seen screenshots such as this one as a specific animator interpreting his ears as like, cat ears or something with furry insides. and i’ve always been like “lol that’s weird but makes sense, pigs have little hairs”. still assuming the cartilage explanation was a default.

image

TO MAKE IT WORSE WORSE. i have been using images such as this one as a go-to painting reference, INCLUDING FOR THE EARS. and have just been like “oh it was a stylistic choice here”.

image

i literally just got up and lifted every piece of Porky merchandise i had, looked closely at his ears, and contemptuously threw it back down realizing that they are all indeed concave. 5 YEARS. HALF A DECADE I HAVE BEEN SO CLUELESS. I’M SO MAD.

this would also not nearly be as big of a deal if I WERE NOT THE SELF PROCLAIMED #1 PORKY PIG FAN AND HAVE SPENT HOURS AND HOURS AND WEEKS AND MONTHS AND YEARS scrutinizing every single detail about him imaginable that nobody else has ever bothered to care about, bringing up new observations and connections and the most menial details possible. i can, have, and will again give breathless diatribes about his significance as a character AND YET I CAN’T EVEN INTERPRET HOW HIS EARS WORK.

image
NEEDLESS TO SAY you all better appreciate Porky's ANATOMICALLY CORRECT EARS in this next art piece when i get it done i can't believe it i was just working on that and then was like................................... oh. OH. COME ON

i don’t have a greater commentary or more streamlined means of posting this other than i. NEED. “you poor unsanitary old underprivileged mongrel you” and “you pathetic, sallow creature you” on my blog for easy access. i laugh out loud every time i so much as think about it. Mike Maltese’s writing is a force to be reckoned with (as is the entire Charlie Dog filmography)

lt often an orphan jones i really like the subtle acting on Porky’s eyes and the turn of the head as he tracks Charlie’s movements in the ‘sleeping bag’ sequence Little Orphan Airedale is my favorite of the three and i think Awful Orphan is the sharpest of the three but this one by and large looks the best plus i love the ending implications of Porky driving out to a desert—that has visible cow skeletons in it rotting—to leave Charlie to die. he lives on a FARM. that is a DEDICATED PURSUIT it’s so dark and it’s great vid

rover’s rival is one of my favorite cartoons of this particular period for a multitude of reasons, a big factor being the overwhelming sense of mischief and whimsy. it’s a very playful cartoon, and this scene is a great example—when mimicking the seal, the puppy’s hind legs actually turn into a dorsal fin. when mimicking rover, puppy physically turns decrepit and starts shaking, and likewise puts on a few pounds and stands upright when mimicking porky. the gags are very literal in their delivery, which hit harder as a result.

not to mention, the dialogue is just as fun as the action on screen—“them thar” has become a permanent part of my vocabulary thanks to this short.

you cannot convince me that this isn’t a reference. i like that Make Way for Tomorrow seemed to be so influential to Bob Clampett that he (at the very least referenced it in three different cartoons)—made an entire homage to it with Rover’s Rival, mimics much of the establishing cinematography in Porky’s Pooch, and of course this

i am weirdly fixated on this because nobody is insinuating otherwise but THATS JUST SO COOL TO ME all three of the cartoons mentioned are some of my absolute favorite Clampett cartoons Kitty Kornered especially of course lt kitty kornered clampett

i just watched Make Way for Tomorrow in which this cartoon seems to be heavily inspired this is to Bob Clampett what Of Mice and Men was to Tex Avery in that i imagine both of them were that Addams Family cartoon of Uncle Feste laughing in the theater full of sobbing patrons 5/5 movie so good but i am utterly heartbroken LOL so i am reblogging clips of the funny cartoon at 1 am this is probably my favorite short of 1937 or very close to it it's fantastic
