In this chapter, I consider how the exploration of perceptual processes associated with abstract art requires a representational framework for perceptual content. I propose the need for a meaningful structured ontology/mereology to depict the general process of perception and specifically perception of abstract fine art. Facet theory and the mapping sentence (Canter, 1985, Hackett, 2014a, Shye, 1978) have been used to form structural ontologies for a variety of human behaviour activities and I provide an overview of traditional quantitative facet theory whilst focusing on innovative qualitative facet theory. I forward an appreciation of facet research and how this is embodied within the mapping sentence and how this makes it applicable to investigating a perception, including perception of art.

ABSTRACT From its inception and development through the work of Louis Guttman in the 1940’s (Guttman, 1947) facet theory has assumed a philosophical stance regarding its subject matter: human beings (Hackett, 2014). In this paper we will consider some of these assumptions and how they have shaped facet theory through the use of its major instrument the mapping sentence. We propose that three words/phrases characterise facet theory: hermeneutic consistency, structured ontology and mereology. Hermeneutical relates to a method of interpretation (Heidegger, 2008, Gadamer, 2004) in their work on knowledge and truth. The phrase hermeneutic consistency refers to the ability to achieve a coherent explanation of an informational source. The second phrase, structured ontology, brings together the concept of ontology or the underlying nature of experience where structured ontology explicates such understanding within a determinate structure. Finally, mereology is the study of part-to-whole and part-to-part relationships within an entity. Thus, it is evident that facet theory and specifically the mapping sentence is well characterised through the use of these terms. In the present paper we will discuss the philosophical meanings of each of these three phrases and word and consider the applied implications of these upon facet theory research.

This chapter introduces the reader to the major themes addressed in this book. We consider the significant and growing literature upon international students’ experiences and factors associated with their mobility, concentrating upon the factors unique to student mobility across international boundaries. We focus on qualitative research into international students’ reports about their own experiences. We briefly introduce readers to qualitative facet theory and the declarative mapping sentence (DMS) which forms the book’s theoretical approach where the DMS is used as a definitional structure for student experience and a template for designing, interpreting, and understanding students’ experiences. We use economic and marketing concepts to enable exploration of salient themes for international students allowing us to emphasizse what helps and hinders international students’ pursuit of their goals.

In this chapter I concentrate on mapping sentence descriptions of abstract art. In offering potentially valid and useful explanations for understanding the experiential process of viewing abstract art, I do not propose a single model of the entire abstract art experience; rather I offer multiple context-specific mapping sentences. Finally, I suggest a mapping sentence of Crowther’s componential ontology for art abstraction. From this mapping sentence I extend my enquiries to consider the partial ordering of elements of my modelling of Crowther’s ontology. The chapter closes by claiming that mapping sentences and partial ordered diagrams of art experience provide an approach capable of producing greater understanding of abstract fine art as experienced phenomena.

In Chapter 1, I provided a consideration of some attempts that have been made to understand complex human behaviour in both a quantitative and qualitative sense. In this chapter this understanding is enhanced by drawing upon research within the areas of philosophy, metaphysics, ontology, mereology, neuroscience, psychology and selected others. The pervasive human characteristic or predisposition of making and using categories of objects and events is considered. I review how categories are employed as a means to allow the simplification of the perceptual process, and the way in which animals (both human and non-human) understand their worlds. Facet theory and the mapping sentence are defined as category analysis procedures.

Human dimensions research has proposed a multitude of variables impacting the viability of wildlife populations. Extant approaches to systematizing these variables have mostly focused on human relations to only one animal species or taxon and are largely descriptive, rather than explanatory. In this study, we provide a three-layer framework for understanding people’s responses to a variety of human–wildlife encounters. We conducted a comparative qualitative study, interviewing 20 stakeholders on one of three ecologically disparate model animals. Through thematic analysis, we identified person-specific, species-specific, and overarching factors whose interplay shapes people’s reactions to encounters with wildlife. The person-specific factors, individual people’s biographic backgrounds and life themes, fuel the polarization of stances towards wildlife. The species-specific factors, people’s mental images of wild animals, explain the particular character of different human–wildlife rel...

The authors present a flexible framework for the understanding of international student mobility. The framework is in the form of a mapping sentence, which has been found to be useful to assist in the understanding of areas of complex human behavior. The second author has previously proposed a mapping sentence for understanding international students' issues in general. The present mapping sentence adapts this framework and suggests a series of important dimensions along which international students' mobility issues can be understood. The proposed mapping sentence in this chapter does not offer data or results from empirical research. Rather, the mapping sentence is suggested as a theoretical interpretative device that may be used to bring order and insight to extant and future research in this area. The mapping sentence constitutes a guide for researchers to design consistent flexible research tools to address international student veridical mobility experiences.

The declarative mapping sentence is both a research methodology within qualitative social science and humanities research, and a way of thinking about such scholarship. In essence, declarative mapping sentences are hypothesised statements of an area of enquiry that guide a researcher’s thoughts, plans and designs, investigations, analyses and interpretations. In this brief essay I consider the often neglected considerations of the philosophical status of the components of the declarative mapping sentence. I suggest that considering the relationship between the parts of a declarative mapping sentence may facilitate a greater understanding of the investigated phenomena.

In this Research Topic, the two editors bring together a series of articles that use facet theory and allied approaches to research. Since its inception in the work of Louis Guttman in the mid-twentieth century, facet theory has become an established approach within social science research. In addition, over the past 70 years, a wide range of research publications have appeared operating within the theoretical and analytic rubric of facet theory and for the last two decades, a biennial international conference has been held devoted to facet theory research. When using a facet theory approach, an implicit aim of the research within this framework is to bring together in an explicit manner a clear definition of the content area that is being investigated along with data analysis procedures. Integrating the explicit design of research content (for example, attitudes, values, etc) and it's subsequent analysis (for example to identify the variables that are influential to respondents in relation to the specific area under investigation,) allows for the construction of theory relating to the content area and for the meaningful measurement of complex research areas. … Read more

To describe the responses of family doctors and nurses to applying an innovative clinical technique and technology in the context of a randomised controlled trial. Multi-faceted descriptive analysis of professional responses in the experimental arm of the trial. 29 family practices involving 30 doctors and 33 nurses over a 3-year time scale and 200 patients with type II diabetes. A new visual agenda-setting technology and other visual aids applied using the techniques of negotiation and motivational interviewing. Uptake of training, use of the method, group discussions, willingness to accept consultation recordings. 100% of clinicians welcomed two or more formal training sessions. The agenda-setting technology was used frequently by 71% of clinicians and occasionally by a further 22%. High levels of engagement with the method occurred among nurses but many doctors also reported benefits. Family doctors and nurses in Wales have found a new technology to facilitate negotiation in diabetes consultation acceptable and useful. Analysis of outcome is now awaited.

AbstractThe purpose of this article is to use a facet theory research approach to provide a clear, coherent, and integrated model of international students' experiences based upon the findings of psychological research into students when studying abroad. In research that employs a facet theory approach events are classified in terms of their constituent parts or facets and the sub-elements of facets. The specification of facets serves to allow accumulative knowledge and theory construction. A model is proposed in the form of a mapping sentence with three background facets and four content facets. How the mapping sentence forms a flexible template for designing, conducting and analyzing research into international students' experiences is discussed, as is the potential in using facet theory to develop a cumulative body of knowledge about this student group. Keywords: International students, student experience, facet theory approach, study abroad.Over recent decades the interna...

In this report we analyse the cognitive performance of New Zealand Robins (Petroica longipes) using facet theory, smallest space analysis (SSA) and partial order scalogram analysis (POSA). The data set we analyse was originally subjected to principle component analysis in order to develop a test-battery for avian cognitive performance. We extend these analyses by proposing a two facet rather than a single component solution using SSA and we characterize individual birds by their scores on all tasks using POSA. We note problems with the small sample size and call for our exploratory analyses to be replicated using a larger sample of birds and for the development of further test items using the facet theory’s tool the mapping sentence. We suggest that facet theory and the mapping sentences are research approaches suitable for conceiving, designing, analysing and developing theory that may be used within avian cognitive research. We conclude by proposing a mapping sentence for avian co...
